Guess you didn't learn anything in school. The American Flag is the SYMBOL of America. If you can't read, maybe you can look at pictures of our GIs raising the American Flag on Iwo Jima in WWII. Or if you're not familiar with that, you may remember the WTC and the firemen raising the American Flag.

Yeah, I know the Pledge. It doesn't say anything about throwing people in jail for making a statement. See if you know who came up with this saying: "I do not agree with what you have to say, but I'll defend to the death your right to say it." That's what I learned.
