A Well-Known Political Blogger Is Hired by the Clinton Campaign
The New York Times ^ | 06/27/2006 | Raymond Hernandez

Posted on 06/27/2006 3:48:25 AM PDT by pjsbro

Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton's campaign has hired Peter Daou, one of the most prominent political bloggers in the nation, to help disseminate her message in a forum that has not always been that hospitable to her. The move underscores the degree to which bloggers — the authors of Web logs, or blogs — have begun to transform American politics.

Mrs. Clinton, who is up for re-election this year and is a possible presidential candidate for 2008, has been a frequent target of bloggers, particularly liberals who are angry over her refusal to disavow her vote in 2002 to authorize President Bush to use force in Iraq. The Clinton camp is clearly counting on Mr. Daou, who directed blog outreach and online rapid response for Senator John Kerry's presidential campaign in 2004, to help improve Mrs. Clinton's image among liberal bloggers, who are fast becoming a constituency in their own right and may thus play a significant role in selecting the Democratic Party's nominee for president. Indeed, several potential candidates — including Mark R. Warner, the former governor of Virginia, and Gov. Tom Vilsack of Iowa — made an appearance this month at a bloggers' convention in Las Vegas. But Mrs. Clinton was not among them.

In a statement that was posted on Salon.com, Mr. Daou, who will be a Web consultant for the campaign, said the "nascent power base" of liberal bloggers "is only beginning to make its presence felt" and will "reach fuller potential with the participation of Democratic leaders."

In addition to working for Mr. Kerry's campaign, Mr. Daou has been an online consultant to the United Nations Foundation and AARP.

But isn't his popularity (whatever it is) due to the fact that he is NOT beholden to anyone?

As soon as he becomes a paid political shill, then he is nothing more than a paid political shill.

One thing they don't seem to understand. A rotting fish still stinks, no matter how many times you try to dress it up.

I think one of the things political strategists are missing about bloggers is that not that many people read them, and even fewer pay any attention to what they say.

Kos & Ko. pretend that they can make a difference, but my experience with FR shows that the difference Kos and FR can make, by themselves, is small.

It depends on how much we, as individuals, are willing to do in the real world.

Exactly. And all his followers will dump him as an establishment traitor.

And bloggers (or anyone else, for that matter) are sposed to be impressed with 'paid political announcements'?

If he's one of the most prominent bloggers in the nation, why haven't I ever heard of him?

You got it, but the geniuses at the Clinton campaign can't grasp this concept.

kos kids write graffiti, and we write checks. We also show up to counter protest, uncover massive fraud in media (rather-gate), and confront evil by guarding over those that have served and sacrificed. Don't count "us" short.

We do many things, and we are noticed by those whose opinion matters.

As best as I can understand it, Mrs. Clinton is for the war but just thinks the President is messing it up because he refuses to listen to the experts, like herself. Instead he depends on the counsel of rank amateurs such as the Joint Chiefs of Staff and the commanders on the ground in Iraq.

Who's Dauo? I've never heard of him...but how typical of the NYT to give him celebrity status, now that he is 'servicing' the beast.
