EAST ST. LOUIS After her 87-year-old next-door neighbor fatally shot a burglar trying to come through the front door, Eleanor Anderson - herself an older adult living alone - began sleeping with two items under her pillow: a cell phone and a gun.
The grandmother was intent on defending herself in a neighborhood that has changed drastically since she was a young girl. Anderson's small, light-green childhood home is protected by security bars and an alarm system. She also has her gun. And when Anderson, 61, heard gunshots one recent night, she was ready. She called police and waited with her snubnose .38.

Praise the Lord and Pass the Ammunition
Granny's got a gun!
These are the Ill residents who voted after hours in St Louis Mo.
I was stupid enough to drive through East St. Louis back in the mid-sixties. I never did it again. The place was a Hell-hole back then and I imagine that it is much worse today. But then, we're only about 40 miles from New Orleans and never go there. Why put yourself in harm's way?
As soon as I saw these gems I knew it!!
Widespread attention followed February's shooting by Anderson's octogenarian neighbor, including intense media coverage - even a mention in the recent American Hunter magazine - and public pleas for the prosecutor to overlook her lack of gun permit.
and... again:
King had no idea that she had killed the intruder, police said. In May, the state's attorney's office announced it would not prosecute King for any crime, including not having a gun permit.
Hey, yeah you - ditz reporterette. In IL we don't NEED a gun permit. In fact NO such permit 'thingy' exits. We need a FOID Card, but it ain't no "permit".
(I swear, it's a Union Rule - gotta be. Any story about firearms must be covered by some ditz who wouldn't know a Colt SSA from a 9 Iron.)
Colt SSA should be SAA -- Grrrrrr
If this was in New York City, Mayor Bloomberg would have Grandma sitting in Rikers Island for the rest of her life for defending herself.
In Massachusetts, only criminals are allowed to have guns.
If you're ever in the Boston area...stay out of Roxbury, Dorchester and East Boston.
This was East St. Louis, Illinois. You have to have a FOID (Firearm Owner's Identification) to even TOUCH a gun legally. Illinois is one of only two states that prevent concealed carry, and the state is basically run from the Chicago Mayors office. The entire issue is treated as if it were one large liberal big city.
When we travel there (family) all firearms are unloaded and locked in a box at the state line, and the trip is as short as possible.
Outside the family, there is nothing in that state that will get us there, or draw any tourist funds from us.
