My military guy checked out the site and said that these aren't kevlar inserts, it's padding so that the top of your head is cushioned. The soldiers can buy these with the rest of some optional gear. They can buy a "donut" too. Most buy the "donut" as it allows air circulation in the helmet and the solid pad at the site doesn't.
I don't get it, how can pads that protect the head be "optional" and why would the troops need to purchase it themselves?
I would have thought that any and I mean ANY "extra" protection would come at no cost.
