To Kill a Mockingbird came out in 1962 and I was too little to see or remember it. But True Grit, well, I was 11 when it came out and loved playing cowboys and indians. I have it on DVD. Still a classic!

This was pretty risque dialog for an 11 year old, but do you remember this scene?

[Rooster confronts the four outlaws across the field]
Ned Pepper: What's your intention? Do you think one on four is a dogfall?
Rooster Cogburn: I mean to kill you in one minute, Ned. Or see you hanged in Fort Smith at Judge Parker's convenience. Which'll it be?
Ned Pepper: I call that bold talk for a one-eyed fat man.
Rooster Cogburn: Fill your hands, you son of a bitch.

If he keeps saying stupid things like "redeploy the troops to Okinawa"...the dems might be less inclined to help him out..

Oh..I take that back...Nancy Pelosi LOVES this guy.

The beheading excuse is supposedly Chechnya, which is a possibility. But, the Ruskies were so adamantly helping Saddam that their "advisors" were still giving Saddam's boys weapons instructions as our troops were entering Iraq.

It makes little sense that all of a sudden the terror types would suddenly forget all this. I'm with Ali, this Duck is walking awfully crooked.

Wasn't it refreshing to hear President Harry "Give em hell" Truman? LOL......Like our President, he did the right thing regardless of the polls.

From a non-college graduate w/a job in retail to VP not being privy to the building of The Bomb and being caught unawares at FDR's sudden death...his voice shook as he took the oath of office.., he went on to become a fearless and responsible ("The buck stops here.")occupant of the Oval Office who fired MacArthur when he disobeyed orders, authorized dropping the bomb that finally ended the long WWII, then retired gracefully.

He was one Democrat that I admired. But like you say, Democrats were different then. (President Reagan, a former Dem and a Rep President said the Dem Party left HIM.)

(I agreed w/the critic about Margaret Truman's musical ability, but I understood Harry as her father taking umbrage. LOL)

RE: Somalia...sounds like enough of that country is being taken over by al-Queda...that few big OLE BOMBS..out to just about do it.

Palestinians and WMDS: Why, though, when I think of the Palestinians, do I think of people that are about as intelligent, and able to put together a stockpile of weapons, as the Liberty Terrorists in Florida???

I am not saying they are dangerous...even the ones in Florida, though not capable of bringing down the Sears Tower, COULD have been dumb and dangerous enough to strap suicide belts on and go to a mall or a school...which makes them VERY scary.

Question. I keep hearing the Democrat party is not what it used to be, and I understand that.

I wonder if past policy and platforms helped "create" the Democrat party of today and IF JFK, FDR and the rest actually contributed to the degradation of their party into what it is today? Surely it would be unintended consequences, but was it in part responsible in your mind?

That isn't a question.  Politically that is THE question.

I'm in the camp that believes that "if they knew then what we know now" they would have made different decisions.  I'm even working on a story (dare I say a novel) based on that theme (don't worry, it will probably never see the light of day, but if it does I'll for sure let all of you know about it!).

All of humanity is reponsible for all that our forebares have done, in the sense that we must pay for the errors they foisted on us.  But we must also judge them by the information they had then, not what we know now.

Most of our ancestors did the best they could with the information (and established "fact" of the day) that they could.  We cannot judge them by the rules of today, but only by the rules they lived under.   Particularly only by the "facts" they lived with.

In my stories JFK, RFK, Harry Truman and Franklin Roosevelt are the "good guys," no matter how wrong they are in their assumptions about the future.  Of course, my "hero" is a character that teaches many of them otherwise...  I'll say no more.

You just said that one line was overboard..and since I haven't read it...I will trust that you are correct...

There were 3 comments that got the Dems in a tizzy ...

one was the comment about calling them broads .. which to me is no big deal .. I've been called worse then that .. by liberals

the 2nd one was about Joe Wilson .. again imo no big deal

The line about enjoying their husbands deaths .. imo was very harsh

Though if you read the complete context .. you'll understand why she wrote it

Well..now that you have teased us with your story...you HAVE to write it. NO getting out of it now.

What you said about JFK and the others being judged by what they knew THEN, not what we know now..

That is basically what the one's on the left that truly (for some reason) believe Bush lied to them forget...that Bush had ONLY the information that said that Saddam WAS a danger to America.

Not what they insist is NO evidence of WMDS, etc.

But, one of the links that Ali just posted, has the very plausible theory of where the Palis got their WMDS, IF they have them..which WOULD play into what I believe happened to them.

Whether I get my act together or not, whether I complete this or not, let alone get it published, you get it.

I am content ... <g>

Amen on the Palis. Let's remember that some factions Iran... thru Syria... have a endless supply of weapons coming in to fight Israel. But WMDs... no one would give Palis WMDs... even though it's Israel. Unless it's dirty bombs.

OK folks, remember the Ak-Sar-Ben plan, we will get Hagel to think he has a chance at the nomination because the MSM loves him so much. He can't run for Pres and Senate at the same time here.

HAGEL FOR PRESIDENT -- (til after the first primary of course)

I was just on the thread about how MSNBC may be cancelling some of their nightly talk shows...and replacing them with taped news shows...

OT....That thread made me think that if Fox was smart, they would have a Sunday night show, LIVE...that would cover all of the Sunday news, as well as dissect the Sunday talk shows...LIKE WE DO...and set our the meme for the next week..

What is coming up in Congress...hearings, bills up for debate, etc....

It would be a LOT better than yet more of the Natalie Aruba stories..

10:04 PM, CDT. I just finished reading your post, which is the last. I've read the WHOLE thing! I posted the thread at 6:45 AM, so it's been a long day.

In between reading I've fixed the broken washing machine, gone to church, cut some of my grass, almost ran over a large rattlesnake in the woods with my tractor, took a nap on the couch, cooked dinner for the family, watched some of Shrek 2 with the kids, waited all day for rain that finally just now came (on and off thunder all day, but never quite hitting our property!), and YES! Finished the Sunday thread!

Life is good.
