Making hay in Iowa By Salena Zito TRIBUNE-REVIEW Sunday, June 25, 2006

When it comes to getting face time with presidential wannabes, Iowans get a little spoiled. It is not uncommon to be able to claim that the president once dripped barbecue sauce on your living room carpet.

Didn't McCain sit out Iowa back in 2000?

So if you live in Iowa and you get a stain on your carpet, you can say, "It's Bush's fault! He did it!"

Interesting to see Mike Huckabee mentioned. I saw him once on C-SPAN and he sounded impressive. Of course some people think his surname will prevent him from being taken seriously.

Governor Huckabee and his band performed at the Free Republic Inaugural Ball in 2005.

I understand that he's quite positive about illegal immigration, though.

Whatever happened to Frank Keating? He was (I thought) a rising star in the GOP. Then he got involved with the US Council of Bishops and the whole priest abuse thing a few years back and I haven't heard a peep out of him since.

Info anyone?

I don't know anything about Huckabee's views on illegal immigration.

Arkansas has always been underpopulated--it's only slightly smaller than Illinois but has less than one-quarter as many people. Maybe Huckabee thinks that if Americans won't come live there, that's another job for illegals to do "that Americans won't do."

I think Frank had to get a paying job after his wife wasn't elected to Congress. As a resident of Oklahoma for most of his time in office, I have to say I believe his fading from the political scene is for the best.

Of his exact position and reasoning, I can't say. I just remember someone on some thread railing about his immigration stance.

Arkansas' agricultural processing industry certainly employs a large number of illegals.
