Based on how this is turning as the weeks go by, you shouldn't credit him for volunteering and "serving" either. You volunteered and served for love of country and because you knew it was the right thing to do. The evidence is suggesting that Murtha only joined with a political carrer end in sight. That well and truly takes away any kind of selfless or honorable credit he should get for joining.

Like Kerry only joining the Navy to get a political career, and requesting the PBRs because thought that was an easy assignment and was too stupid to know they would be going up river in heavy combat, not just off the coast.
