Keyes addresses Provo rally

In address at Provo rally, he says issue will determine future of U.S.

PROVO — The immigration debate is heating up in the days leading up to many of Utah's primary elections, so much so that former Republican presidential candidate Alan Keyes came to Utah to "educate" voters on the issue.

"This is an issue that one way or another is going to determine the future of this republic," Keyes said at a state Capitol news conference Wednesday. "The American people need to wake up."

Keyes also spoke at a rally in Provo at the same time as the anti-illegal immigration groups Utah Minuteman Project and Federation for American Immigration Reform held a meet-the-candidates forum in Salt Lake.

Keyes said he wasn't in Utah to endorse either 3rd District Congressman Chris Cannon or his challenger, John Jacob, in Tuesday's Republican primary but to educate voters so they could make up their own minds. He also declined to say if he believed either candidate's immigration proposals are workable solutions.

Cannon, who was in Washington, D.C., said in a telephone interview he wasn't worried the event could be seen as a back-door endorsement of Jacob. Cannon said he's worked with Keyes in the past, and if he says he's not taking a position, "he certainly is not taking a position."

Cannon said he agreed with those calling for a secure border and better interior enforcement. He pointed to an enforcement bill the House passed last December as a good first step.

"If you are going to solve the problem, you actually have to solve the whole problem," he said. "They are not wrong in that regard. ...

"Having citizen involvement to help enforce the law is good. It's also good to have a law that's clear," he said. "We want a robust migratory process so people can come and leave and know America and love America, and try to build the content of America in other countries."

The Provo rally began with a documentary video sold as a fund-raiser for the National Minuteman Political Action Committee, "Cochise County USA: Cries from the Border." Several people complained to rally organizers about the movie's length.

Jacob, Constitution Party candidate Jim Noorlander and National Minuteman PAC spokeswoman Carmen Mercer spoke before Keyes took the stand two hours after the rally started.

The documentary provided images that showed the porous nature of the U.S. border with Mexico, a situation recently conceded by President Bush.

Keyes zeroed in on Bush for that statement.

"He's in the sixth year of his presidency," Keyes said. "Read between the lines: 'I have not done my job the last six years.' Then (the president) announced, as if we should be enthusiastic about it, 'Now I'm going to do it.' "

Keyes did not endorse Jacob, but he did say voters should question members of Congress who have been there for a decade a more. Cannon is in his 10th year.

"It's time," Keyes said, "we ask them what they've been doing all this time."

Jacob also said he disagreed with the president.

"I love the president, I voted for him twice, I'd want to vote for him again and support him on anything except his immigration policy."

Jacob was received warmly, but Noorlander earned bigger cheers when he said, "Both major parties are pandering to the Latino vote" by expanding "the social welfare state."

Mercer, a legal immigrant from Germany who is now a U.S. citizen, endorsed a change in Utah's 3rd District.

"We have promised our senators and congressmen, if they will not protect our border, we will go after them and put the right people in office," she said.

Keyes' forceful message earned standing ovations.

"This situation is so far out of control," he said, "we do not even know how far out of control it is."

Meanwhile, a small gathering at the Salt Lake County Government Complex in Salt Lake City applauded Jacob and other candidates calling for tougher border security and no amnesty.

Brent Cardall, a Republican candidate for Salt Lake County sheriff, had harsh words for incumbent Sheriff Aaron Kennard.

"When he says, 'Hey, this is a federal problem,' as a law enforcement officer and as a citizen, I have a problem with that," Cardall said. "There are many laws out there the sheriff isn't enforcing."

Other candidates at the forum included Rep. Glenn Donnelson, R-North Ogden, running for re-election in District 7; Ron Mortensen, Republican House District 20 candidate, and Pete Moesser, Republican House District 33 candidate.

Provo crowd likes Keyes' tough talk on immigration Provo event: Jacob and Noorlander, Cannon's political rivals, call for tougher policies

By Glen Warchol

The Salt Lake Tribune

PROVO - What was billed as a discussion on immigration led by former presidential candidate Alan Keyes turned into a noisy rally for candidates trying to unseat 3rd Congressional District incumbent Chris Cannon.

After a film on border problems in Cochise County, Ariz., Republican John Jacob and Constitution Party candidate Jim Noorlander were cheered for their calls for tougher policies on immigration.

Cannon was invited to the event, but declined, saying he was needed in Washington, an announcement that drew laughter from the crowd of about 300.

Jacob acknowledged President Bush's endorsement Tuesday of Cannon was "daunting." But said, it is an indication that Utah voters are in a rare situation to affect national policy. "Immigration reform is beyond Chris Cannon and John Jacob and if we don't fix it, we won't have an America," the Eagle Mountain businessman said. "Let's send Washington, D.C., a mandate that we want change. If you want change, vote for me."

Noorlander said, ''Both national parties are pandering to the Latino votes because of the social welfare programs,'' and ultimately want to merge the nations of North America, "It will be the downfall of this country.''

Keyes brought fire and brimstone to the Provo crowd, but this night, the religion was halting illegal immigration.

Hosted by Eagle Forum, Renew America and Minuteman political action groups, Keyes' message resonated with a crowd making its mind up on who will represent them in the 3rd Congressional District, which begins in Salt Lake County and sprawls southward through Provo and terminates in Beaver County.

"This is a situation that in one way or another affects the future of the republic," Keyes said. Still, Keyes refused to endorse a candidate in Tuesday's primary. "I'm not here to get involved in politics. I leave it to the good judgment of the people."

But he was clearly skeptical of incumbents, saying that in the past 20 years, leadership in Washington has shown "incompetence, neglect and willful disregard" of the immigration problem.

"You better let them know they better shape up or we will kick them out. You need to pick a choice few and kick them out," he said.

Keyes called the Minuteman organization a perfect example of self-rule and chastised the federal government for labeling the anti-immigration group as vigilantes. He suggested the Minuteman be made official auxiliaries to the Border Patrol.

In Salt Lake County offices, about 40 people gathered at a Utah Minuteman Project/Federation for American Immigration Reform-sponsored rally against illegal immigration. Cannon's opponent, Jacob, told the group that it has the opportunity to "send a mandate to Washington, D.C."

It is exciting to have President Bush and the first lady endorsing his opponent, Jacob said, but "no matter how powerful he is, he doesn't vote in the 3rd District."

Keyes is great. My first political donation was to the Quixotic presidential campaign of Alan Keyes back in 1996.

Hopefully, Cannon will be sent packing. His sudden conversion to tough talk on border enforcemnet is comical, ludicrous, and transparent. May the good voters of Utah see through this phoney baloney party hack.

Go back to the mental hospital. Do you want to pay for MORE income taxes when he picks and choses who pays taxes. He will have all African Americans exempt.

I'd vote for Keyes for pres. I believe he said he was for tax exemption for a limited time to those who could PROVE ancestry to slaves (thats a very small amount of blacks btw) Thats better than some repubs wanting to give free Medicare, free schooling, free welfare and SS to 15 million criminal Mexicans every year ain't it?

Keyes is very smart and has great insite, and a lotof important things to say. Unfortunately, they should be distilled down to a digestible volume before he starts, otherwise his profound observations become lost in a sea of snores ..... "ZZZZZZZZZZZZZ"

we have political leaders who are more interested in expanding their coalition of power than they are in preserving constitutional self-government in America. They have a stronger allegiance to the selfish interests that can help build them up than they do to the Constitution, established by the sovereign people of this country, that they are now with their foolish neglect and their malicious abandonment willing to tear down.

And that suggests that, as much as it might pain us to think about it, we need to lay before the elites who are offering us this kind of nonsense a simple and clear challenge, and that challenge, my friends, is that they should remember their oath.

Right here, I'd say Keyes has been reading my tagline. Or my homepage. Or my mind. Or my CONSTITUTION.

BUMP!

You may talk about the nobility of human nature, but there is something in human nature which will laugh in the face of every ideal you have. If you refuse to agree with the fact that there is vice and self-seeking, something downright spiteful and wrong in human beings, instead of reconciling yourself to it, when it strikes your life, you will compromise with it and say it is of no use to battle against it...Always beware of an estimate of life which does not recognize the fact that there is sin.

May we every one repent of our sins and may God have mercy on America, amen.
