Pretty cool, are you your own boss?
I'm hoping to be my own boss one of these days, (starting 3 different businesses) and then i can call my own good shots :)
I'm tired of being a corporate slave.

No, not really. I work for an employee-owned company, and I put in more than my share of 12-hr days lately. So I am taking it easy. ;)

I have actually done that - scared the heck out of me.

Got off the runway, and was completely lost in the fog.

Decided maybe I am not immortal, after all.

Worst part was, I had my kid on board - he sensed how scared I was.

The "Gimli Glider" incident occurred July 23, 1983. Type in "Gimli Glider" at any search engine to learn more.

Our northern friends do seem to be fond of flying commercial passenger aircraft as gliders - and fortunately they're pretty good at it: Air Transat Flight 236 ran out of fuel between Toronto and Lisbon and glided 65 nm to an airfield in the Azores. The CBC story about it is here.

I was a passenger on such a flight... Piper Cherokee I think. Scared the future private pilot out of me!

I was with a college roommate (student pilot), we were ferrying a plane from Orlando to Daytona Beach. We had to "pop in" between the large jets taking off every 30 seconds. It was like trying to merge onto a freeway from a dead stop.

How do you misjudge the fuel from Fort Lauderdale to St. Thomas, anyway? Did the Virgin Islands move while he was gone?

Geez... we had clear skys and it was sunny out. Sounds like you had a real "oops' I crapped my pants" experience!

He probably assumed his wife filled up the tank on the way home from the grocery.
