The British dumped thousands of tons into the sea, it's
there now waiting.

The idea that somehow old gas shells aren't dangerous is
insane.

I seem to remember a munitions ship that sank near the mouth of the Thames, it's now too dangerous to try and remove and it's too much to try and blow in place.

I remember that story. They're worried that the explosives are becoming increasingly unstable.

I read that after WW2 there were tons of munitions and jeeps and tanks just dumped in the ocean.

They didnt want to bring them back and sell the jeeps because the domestic car market would have been ruined.
