TOKYO -- A newspaper reported Thursday that Nissan plans to develop a new heavy-duty version of its Titan pickup truck by the end of the decade to cash in on the lucrative U.S. market.
Currently, the Titan is only sold in the United States.
The Wall Street Journal reported that the beefed-up version of Nissan's Titan would be aimed at contractors and trailer haulers. It would compete with vehicles such as Ford's F-250 pickup.
A Nissan spokeswoman declined comment.
The move would be a challenge to the domain of Ford, General Motors and Chrysler, which have leaned on highly popular pickup trucks to offset slumping sales of passenger cars. The vehicle is reportedly scheduled to come out in late 2009.
Nissan would likely stop making Nissan Quest minivans at the company's assembly plant in Canton, Miss., to make room for the new Titan, the report said.
The Houston Chronicle reported that Nissan produced 99,775 units of the current Titan in 2005. Both the Titan and the Quest are made at the Mississippi plant, The Chronicle reported.
You're nuts. That thing is beautiful.
I am a E-Type nut as well. I'd have built that (a 1964)instead of the AC Cobra if there were a Jag kit available.

I love my truck.
I get a lot of compliments on mine. It's a black LE crew cab 4x4.
Car guy ping. The conversations are wandering.
Does anyone else have an Amazon-Women-on-the-Moon moment when they see the name of this truck?
I'll grant you the side and rear views aren't too bad, but that front end? U-G-L-Y.
That's the problem of the guy driving in front of the truck.
My partner has a 470, nice and plush. I'd have one to if it wasn't for all the crap i have to haul with me. Have a little trouble getting him to haul pumps, valves, wonder why?
The convertible XKE (sea frost greeen) is the prettest car ever made.
May not run great, but still wonderful.
(Wife just trader her S-Type (second prettiest car in the world, with which we never did anything but change the oil) for a Super XJ8L (kiddos need room) --- hope we have as good of luck.
