In a world where more and more children are being sexually victimized by predators they met on the internet, I have heard not one word from all the educrats about sex education to address this problem. While they continue to sing the praises of condom use and denounce abstinence based sex ed, which of the two approaches would better help a potential victim keep from being taken advantage of?
" . . . which of the two approaches would better help a potential victim keep from being taken advantage of?"
Parents who parent. Adults who keep an eye on what their kids are doing, especially monitoring computer use.
Any savvy 13-year-old can lie about her age and post whatever she wishes on sites like MySpace. And they do it, en masse, because parents aren't watching. It's the current equivalent of sneaking out the window after bedtime.
MySpace has options for making profiles private, for safeguarding personal information, and for protecting identities. But MySpace can't make its members (or their parents) use good judgement or common sense.
It's all about personal (and parental) responsibility.
Actually, altho it was not in our curriculum, I did talk about this sort of stuff to my Health Class (9th graders).
