I'm not buying it.

Every teen-ager I see wears a "uniform". They dress similar, they do their hair the same way, they trick up their cars the same way, etc. Somehow I don't think they do this because they are immune to the opinions of their peer group.

Decades from now, crotchedy old men and prudish women will be complaining about kids not exposing their boxers, shaving every day, and wearing only the most subtle of piercings.
