I called a friend of mine in NYC and asked: Are New Yorkers polite?
He replied "You're ****in' right we are, you ****in' piece of ****." Then he slammed down his phone.
So I'm convinced.

I have lived in NY (8 yrs), over the bridge in NJ(30 yrs) and currently in MA.(12 yrs). I have also traveled through the South. People are most polite in the South, then NY area and by far the least polite and friendly people are in the New England States

I think your friend and my cousin Anthony are the same person.

Well I have never lived in the NYC metro area (was an upstater for 10 years though) however on my visits to NYC I always found the people to be polite to be honest. The absolute rudest people I have ever met is a tie between New England and Virginia Beach.

Well, I lived in Rochester NY for several years. NYC I only visited - but my impression of NYC is opposite of yours.

The preferable affirmative New York response is, "F*ckin' A", followed by [if quzzical looks are received, "You gotta problem wit dat?"

I worked in Manhattan 1974-83. NY-ers were a tough bunch. But I learned that when they tell you to go F yourself, it was as normal part of speach as "dude" on the California coast.
Two years ago, I went back for a holiday. They had become much more considerate (after Rudy).
In fact, I thought I even heard a "Please go F yourself" once or twice.

Gotta say - my family actually drove through NY City once and did get lost a couple times. They were impressed to find that people there were just as likely to want to help out as in many other places.

Actually, under Rudy Giuliani, New Yorkers made a complete turn to politeness. Really.

Being from Boston I have no deep love for New York but yes, New Yorkers are quite polite.
Not friendly like folks in Kentucky or Tennessee but polite.
I consulted there a lot and figured that there are millions of them and a good percent are crazy, drugged out or dangerous. So it's incumbent of New Yorkers to be polite just out of a sense of survival.

I've visited NYC several times and found the people there to be quite friendly. The only genuinely rude person I've encountered there was a tour guide at the stock exchange.
BUT,
When they travel, however, something changes. What is it with New Yorkers when they're in another state or country??? Holy shite what a bunch of loud, obnoxious boors! The men too!
Thanks for letting me get that off my chest, I feel much better now. I hope I don't get banned.

Actually, they're not too bad, so long as you don't have to drive among them!
