About 2 miles from my home, there is an office building with a series of "lakes" or ponds around it. The lakes are pretty, but they are an unnatural blue, probably full of stuff to keep overgrowth and mosquitos at bay. They are also populated with turtles, ducks, geese, and swan.
About six months ago, the ducks began to disappear. It turns out the the Chinese restaurant adjacent to these lakes had been catching the ducks to serve to their customers. Needless to say, they've been shut down.
I used to work for a woman who owned Chinese restaurants. They use slave labor in the kitchen. They bring in employees from overseas who don't speak a word of English. They pay them minimum wage but demand they live in a house owned by the restaurant owner. They charge them outrageous rent and almost all of the rest of the money goes to the employee's family in China/Taiwan/Hong Kong. The employee gets lots of favor back home. The owner keeps them poor so they can't start a competing restaurant. Any infractions and they get sent home in disgrace.
Oddly, advanced cooking skills are not a prerequisite for employment. Your garden variety moron can make Chinese food.
Chinese Veterinarian: "We're so sorry. Your dog die. Want to stay for dinner?" ;)
LOL!!!
I did a little bit of Googling and found this...
According to a guide to Singapore food, "Animals esteem the durian equally as much as humans--tapirs, tigers, pigs, flying foxes, rhinos and monkeys are known to eat them voraciously, and elephants often swallow them whole. Protected by their horny shell, they emerge from the elephant's digestive tract intact. Indeed, this specially 'processed' variety is coveted above all others by the natives of northern Malaya."
Five minutes after I read it I was hungry again.
Ugggggggh. Not a surprise in the least bit... Mexican is about the only cuisine that benefits from Americanization IMHO.
