BUSH IS POPULAR AT MERCHANT MARINE GRADUATION
(CBS/AP) KINGS POINT, N.Y. Appearing at what one academy official previously had called "a little dot of red inside a very blue state," President Bush was warmly greeted Monday by relatives and graduates at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, becoming the first president to address a commencement in the school's 70-year history.
"It's just a monumental event, a great day for the class of 2006, a great day for the academy," beamed newly commissioned Naval Reserve Ensign Michael Perich of Pittsburgh, Pa. "He's popular. This is probably the most conservative place on Long Island."
