Coulter's Crudeness
Boston Globe ^ | 6/19/06 | Cathy Young

SEVERAL years ago, left-wing cartoonist Ted Rall published a cartoon mocking the ``terror widows" -- the bereaved of the Sept. 11 attacks as well as Marianne Pearl, the widow of kidnapped and slain journalist Daniel Pearl -- as a bunch of greedy and shallow attention-seekers. The outrage was universal. A number of press outlets, including The New York Times website, pulled the cartoon. Subsequently, when the Times and The Washington Post stopped carrying Rall's work, conservatives called it a victory for decency.

Now, the right has its own Ted Rall in the infamous Ann Coulter. In her new book, ``Godless: The Church of Liberalism," Coulter takes a whack at the ``Jersey Girls," four Sept. 11 widows who have been highly critical of the Bush administration. She refers to them as ``self-obsessed women" who ``believe the entire country was required to marinate in their exquisite personal agony," and then concludes with this zinger: ``These broads are millionaires, lionized on TV and in articles about them, reveling in their status as celebrities and stalked by grief -arrazies. I have never seen people enjoying their husband's death so much."

A number of conservatives, including prominent Republican blogger and radio talk-show host Hugh Hewitt, have denounced Coulter's statement. Unfortunately, many others have rallied to her defense. Radio and Fox News talk-show host Sean Hannity has mildly suggested that she may have gone too far, but has avoided condemning her outright and has given her plenty of airtime on his show.

Bill O'Reilly, the host of the Fox News show ``The O'Reilly Factor," has been harshly critical of Coulter's comments. Yet several of his conservative guests vigorously defended her. Republican strategist Karen Hanretty opined,

My turning point with Ann was when she likened Harriet Miers to a cleaning lady (I heard that out of her own mouth).

Brilliance I respect, pure meanness and being a bully....
I hate.

I agree with his point. Being a victim of a crime or tragedy does not endow people with the right to be screened from harsh criticism if they step out into the limelight and prove themselves utter fools.

"Coulter didn't suffer a personal loss that she claims gives her absolute moral authority to pronounce on areas in which she has no expertise."

Ah. The ol' libtard logic that says that any sort of liberal fanatic is infallable so long as, you know, they've "suffered a loss."

Her next book can be how libs/MSM grab on to one or two incendiary statements an author or politician has said and try get the world to discount everything else that person ever says or does. That is the rtactic being used now, though very ineffectively.

Yer doin' good! Almost 200 pro-Coulter posts and you've managed to spew like a good little libby.

Let's see - Coulter didn't suffer a personal loss that she claims gives her absolute moral authority to pronounce on areas in which she has no expertise.

THAT's the difference.

BINGO! Shes a zephyr in these areas. I mean, Paris Hilton has as much knowledge as she does when it comes to relationships, loss, grief....how to wear a miniskirt etc.

"If there were Bush-supporting widows who went to the same extremes as the Jersey widows, basing their efforts on partisan lies, then you would see plenty of condemnation of them here." There is a big difference between condemnation and personal attacks. Yeah, seeing what I have at FR I can believe some here would engage in personal attacks for disagreements within conservative circles. But that isn't what I'm talking about. If someone from outside conservative circles were to personally attack a Bush supporting widow, you would be outraged. Heck, I'm willing to bet that most of the people here would be outraged if someone on the left called Ann Coulter a harpy.

The Sweet Potato Queens Wedding Planner/Divorce Guide

BTW, all the lit boards, who used to be about 50/50 on Ann are now like 99/1 hating her. The SPQ board has lots of military wives etc and none of them are cutting her an inch of slack.

These women know mean and catty and NO one is forgiving her for ther stupid girl slams she made. She crossed a line.

If this chick is "right of center" she must be in the David Gergen mold of the term.

No wait, "right of center" facing the front or facing the back?
I get that mixed up. Can we do it over?

You were the one that brought it up as a way of discounting her popularity. I just set the record straight.

Question for you though. Why do you spend time arguing with the majority here on this topic? You either enjoy the fracas, or you really feel the need to convince us that Ann is bad for conservatism. There are conservative pundits/talk show hosts that I cannot stand as well, but spend scant time criticising them, especially with the realization that they are all (more or less) pulling generally the same direction I want the country to go.

And in France or Canada, she'd likely be brought up on charges of hate speech. One more reason to love and fight for America.

Coulter could no doubt have filled 20 pages with rebuttles to their positions without speculating on they joy at losing their husbands.

Part of me says that you're EXACTLY right.

But on the other hand, the Left has been so over the top for so long - including the actions of the Jersey Girls and Cindy Sheehan, that the Left can no longer discern the difference between sane discourse and insane behavior.

As over the top as Coulter may be, her behavior sparks debate on the merits of how the other side acts. I mean, if a Leftie is going to condemn Coulter on SPECIFIC behavior, then it should difficult for them to not condemn (or at least recognize) the worse behavior of their own.

Not really. It would just be another example in Ann's favor... attacking the messenger rather than the message. Ann makes it very clear why she criticizes the MSM and their handling of the Jersey Girls. Why don't you back up why you think she's a harpy?

Well, I've always tried to be civil with the dems. But, the war changed all that...they don't seem to have enough sense to support the self defense of America. They can't be trusted.
