Not very many of the students described in the article are children of "baby-boomers". In fact, way more of them are grandchildren of actual baby-boomers than are children of babt-boomers. The author is confused, at best.
I don't think so. The 'baby boom' generation is usually defined as born 1945-1963 (or 4). I'm a late 'boomer' and have a college senior, a college sophomore and a high school junior.
Also, a lot of 'boomers' were so self-absorbed (either with narcisistic new-left politics or careerism, or both in sequence) that they delayed having children.
Do your math. Many Baby Boomers (born between 1946 and 1966) now have college age kids. Yes, some early Baby Boomers may have college-age grandchildren, but there are very few.
Sorry, but you're the one who's confused. Your math is way off.
The first baby-boomers were born in 1946. If they had kids at age 22 (1968), and those kids had kids at age 22 (1990), their oldest grandkids would be 16 this year. If the boomers had kids at 18 (1964) and their kids had kids at 18 (1982), the oldest grandkids could be college graduates -- but let's face it, parents who start having kids at 18 are less likely to go to college themselves, or send their kids.
My dad is one of those first Baby Boomers -- just turned 60 this month. He married right out of college, and had me when he was only 24. I'm 36, and while it's conceivable that I could have a college-age child, it would be a stretch. There are probably a few baby boomer grandkids in college, but they're certainly not the majority.
Baby Boomers are defined as the generation born between 1946 and 1959. If they delayed having children, which they were more likely to do than preceding generations, say to age 30, then their first-borns would be born between 1976 and 1989. Add in subsequent kids, and that includes most of today's college-age population.
That was my thought when I read this article. My hubby and I are boomers and our children are at this age now- but we got married later and had children later than most. Most parents of kids the age of ours are several years younger.
