Didn't it seem they really took a harder stand against those guys once Murtha decided to interfere? While Rummy or the President cannot interfere directly with the JAG or NCIS, certainly they could have come out and made a strong statement about Murtha's interference.

Murtha certainly did interfere. Guess he didn't read the AQ Handbook. I know it states that they should claim that they were tortured if they are in custody and IIRC it mentions something about claiming civilian deaths.
I heard on the radio the other day that VP Cheney wasn't aware of the situation; however, someone told him about it and the next day the shackles were removed and their status in custody was lessened. The host said that he didn't have anything to specifically contribute it to Cheney; however, it was quite a *coincidence*.
