Of course!

In that order.

Still begs the question if this was a checkpoint with that many troops manning it, was there over-watch in place. Obviously there will be things we don't know fully about the attack in order for us to adjust our TTPS.

But this is every ground Soldiers worst nightmare, and hopefully we get these guys back and take some hard learned lessons out of it.

There were more than three. The rest of them took off after the original hit and run raiders, leaving the three at the checkpoint. Whereupon the second wave hit. It's called a feigned withdrawal, and it's literally one of the oldest tricks in the book

Exactly. The bulk of the patrol took the bait, but the ambush wasn't for them, it was for the security element left behind. No doubt the insurgents have seen this phenomenon before, and realized "Hey, we could probably sneak up on the small team that's left behind and bag them".

As far as that goes, it shows either criminal or strategic thinking. Yousefiyah itself is a farming area near Baghdad rife with kidnap for ransom gangs and Sunni extremist sympathizers. It's very likely that local insurgents/criminals caught these guys to sell to al-Qa'ida in Iraq or some other major group. It's possible that a larger group just did it themselves, but it seems to be a local job by people who were very, very familiar with the terrain, and the specific tactics used by these checkpoint guards.

Either way, it would have been a lot safer to gun these guys down and shoot a quick propaganda video rather than take them alive. They're taking a huge risk doing this, and that leads me to believe that this wasn't just some clever insurgents who pulled off a nice ambush. It was a coordinated maneuver to take hostages by people with a plan.

I'm sure there was a QRF. I'm also sure that the locals knew exactly how long it took for the QRF to get there. I'm sure they did a number of dry runs, checking our reactions and response times. They probably figured that under the right conditions, they'd have a window of X ammount of minutes between when the patrol took the bait until when reinforcements showed up.

We do know that one soldier was killed on scene. I don't know how that happened, but it could be that the kidnappers figured that leaving a man dead or critically wounded would buy them additional time. It could (and possibly did) get us to look around the checkpoint for other bodies rather than immediately initiate a larger search for escaping kidnap vehicles.

Open Letter to George's Mama (Cindy Sheehan BARF Alert)

Thank you SoldierDad for speaking out!

"To: proud_yank
This is addressed directly to Cindy Sheehan. Shame on you, Cindy, for your diatribe of rhetoric directed at the mother of a President with the courage to stand up to the Bullies of the world who would have gladly killed your son if he would have only been on the planes or in the buildings they initially targeted. Your son knew what the dangers of military service were when he joined, just as my son knows the dangers now. He will be deployed in August to Iraq and we will have "skin in the game". Does this allow me the "moral authority" to debunk your lies and insensitive comments about our President and his administration? Or are only those with your particular left bending view of the world permitted such moral authority? I am outraged that you think your comments will have some positive outcome for our soldiers in harms way, when the truth is that you are only providing aid and comfort to those who killed your son, and you are seriously injuring the morale of our soldiers who are willingly fighting to save your sorry butt.

Sincerely,

The proud father of an American Soldier

And thank Murtha and his ilk should anything befall those soldiers. Whipping up sentiments against the US in a war. During the Civil War, Lincoln would have had Murtha and Kerry arrested and jailed.

Thanks much, but I figured it out already. Yikes to others who have not.

I am not joking when I say the owner has repeatedly told/said I would be banned. I do not not know why he has NOT banned me.

Guess because he may recognize me as a true fellow partner to another VN 100% disabled vet. That's all I can imagine.

I may be next - to no longer be a be a FReeepublic member, as it has been a long time coming.

Lord love our Vets - past and current!
