1. Really don't care THAT much how many of their people survive--they are certain that MORE of them will--sufifient numbers to be king of the smoldering hill.
2. Therefore, they really don't care how many of their missles get through, they figure it will be enough to devastate us more than we devastate them--given their population and vast country with most folks living in the countryside, still.
Nonsense. If they didn't care how many people they would lose, they would be in Taiwan by now. If you believe the lives of the people in the countryside won't be affected by a nuclear attack, you are living in a fantasy world. The Chinese are not insane.

On this my former Red Guard buddies agree that I'm right.
Beijing Government does not really care how many 100's of millions of it's citizens it sacrifices.
They care about a couple of things.
1. Staying in power more or less at all costs.
2. The survival and supremacy of the Chinese culture and Communist Party government--more or less in that order IF it is after WWIII
Were you incountry during Tienanmen? Have you read the Tienanmen papers? The Art of War?
They are not insane--mostly--but they are insanely arrogant and megalomaniacal. And they really do not care that much about the serfs. All is grist for the mill for the motherland and the Great Chinese Culture.
There are a variety of reasons why they haven't taken Taiwan yet.
Some of them may have to do with the puppet masters not allowing it yet.
And, they'd prefer to insure success with a minimum of loss though they are prepared to take unprecedented losses.
And, I think they'd rather have the 2008 Olympics out of the way, first.
Though some have predicted overt WWIII starting in 2006.
We shall see.
