"Foremost among the Bush administration's fears of the coming landmark are concerns it will fuel renewed anger among conservatives over federal immigration and border-security policies. Immigrants accounted for about 40 percent of population growth in recent years, and about half of them entered the United States illegally."

The value of a literate population is wayyy overrated.

". . .loss of open space. . ." another nit-wit comment from the coast-bound.
We've got plenty of open space here in Kansas (and Nebraska and Oklahoma, or that matter), and seem to be getting more, given that we're loosing population.
I seem to recall reading somewhere that if the state of Texas was turned into an average density American suburban subdivision, all of humanity could live in single-family homes there (leave aside the logistics of getting services to them--it's a thought experiement to show the absurity of the 'OMG we're running out of land' nonsense). That was a while back, no we'd probably need a bit of Oklahoma, too.

Aware of the anxieties, the Bush administration is low-key about the approaching population landmark.
Even Bush knows where the vast majority of Americans stand on illegal immigration. He just doesn't give a damn.

I'm going to go through one of those new-agey rebirthing processes, so I can have a shot at being the 300 millionth American.
'Cause let's face it - 195,760,851 is, well, boring.

I'd like to smack this little smart ass:
[Census Director Louis] Kincannon joked that immigration opponents this year may try to repeat Life magazine's publicity stunt by seeking to identify someone who illegally crosses the U.S-Mexican border at about the time the milestone is reached. "The Minutemen, if they've got an intellectual arm, might say: 'Well, here's Miguel, who is the 300 millionth American!' "
It's more like this, Kincannon:
'Well, here's Miguel, who is the 300 millionth American anchor baby!'

A third of the way to the goal. If we can just get the Guest Worker Program we'll make it to that one billion mark yet.
