Tension between Antonio Villaraigosa and Democratic gubernatorial nominee Phil Angelides surfaced Friday as the Los Angeles mayor declined to say whether he backed his own party's candidate to unseat Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger.
The rift between two of California's top Democrats became clear just after they appeared with Magic Johnson to celebrate the opening of a Starbucks on Crenshaw Boulevard.
Minutes after Villaraigosa's tepid remarks on his candidacy, Angelides refused to take a stand on Villaraigosa's plan to take over the Los Angeles public schools.
The dual snubs were part of a broad conflict between the two Democrats.
Villaraigosa is torn between party loyalty and the potential rewards offered by his new alliance with the Republican governor. He plans to campaign with Schwarzenegger for bond measures on the November ballot that could offer Los Angeles billions of dollars for schools, housing and traffic relief. And the governor would decide where much of that bounty went.
There is also a matter of personal ambition: Villaraigosa is widely seen as a top Democratic candidate for governor in 2010 provided that Angelides loses.
For Angelides, support from Villaraigosa, a major political star, is crucial, especially in Southern California. But the mayor's top priority is his school takeover plan. And it should come as no surprise that Angelides is distancing himself from that: The effort's No. 1 opponent, the California Teachers Assn., has spent more than $1 million promoting Angelides for governor.
With that backdrop, the mayor was less than enthusiastic when asked outside Starbucks whether he supported his party's nominee for governor.

If Villaraigosa becomes CA governor, the state is in big trouble. You might as well fence it off from the rest of the USA.
His MEChA connections shows he is a completely corrupt indivdual, capable of anything. And this will be his downfall.
Course the reconquistas will tolerate his corruption---but the rest of the voters won't.
As well, Villaraigosa may be ambitious but I doubt whether he can carry the heavy water needed for the job. He'll screw up---sooner or later.
FREEPER ACTIVISM Illegal aliens most probably filled out fraudulent official documents using forged documents and phony SS numbers in order to vote on tax-exempt bond issues. The improper use of tax-exempt bonding and spending of state and municipal tax funds through illegal means would jeopardize investors and holders of tax-exempt bonds. The SEC should be advised of these abuses. EMAIL enforcement@SEC.gov
FREEPER ACTIVISM Moreover, if the state and municipalities colluded with banks to misuse the sanctioning power of the FDIC in improper ways, to engage in illegal activity with tax-exempt government funds, that should be pursued with the FDIC.
Banks doing business with municipalities that are conducting illegal activity are jeopardizing bank patrons, shareholders, and depositors and should be reported as follows: The Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) is the primary federal regulator for national banks. The OCC's Customer Assistance Group is available to assist customers with questions or complaints concerning national banks. Email to Customer.Assistance@occ.treas.gov. General information about the Customer Assistance Group is available on their web site: http://www.occ.treas.gov/customer.htm.
You can reach one of the OCC Customer Assistance Specialists by calling toll free number, 1-800-613-6743, Monday-Thursday, 9-4, and Friday 9-3.
FREEPER ACTIVISM State and municipal bonding agents, and banks, doing business with government agencies are registered broker-dealers and members of the National Association of Securities Dealers (NASD) and the Securities Investor Protection Corporation (SIPC). NASD and SIPC should also be contacted regarding any concerns about illegal activity.
FREEPER ACTIVISM Now, if duly elected federal, state, county and municipal, officials are demanding and encouraging ILLEGALS to break the law, to obtain the unlawful right to vote, and if elected and appointed officals did, in fact, allow illegals to break the law to serve on municipal councils, and if illegals are making monetary (taxing) decisions for US Citizens, this might be a violation of the Hobbs Act.
If elected and appointed officials took campaign contributions from said illegals, this could be characterized as extortion, and/or bribery, and a violation of the Hobbs Act.
The Hobbs Act was used recently to nail four Tenn state legislators and their aids in an extortion scheme. The TENN groups was arrested under the federal Hobbs Act, charging extortion, conspiracy to extort and attempted extortion, and accepting bribes by an agent of the state. The Hobbs Act covers extortion by public officials by Force, Violence, or Fear
FREEPER ACTIVISM And of course, the improper use and abuse of tax-exempt bonding referenda and the improper budgeting of funds raised from bonding through fraudulent means should be reported to your local IRS office.
"Schwarzenegger has done more to advance the left's agenda than any Democrat Governor could have ever dreamed of. "

That is YOUR OPINION, and it's WRONG and NOT supported by facts.
Here you are again, pushing Angelides for governor.
I don't want to repeat myself, so please read my post 13 and 14 on this thread, especially 14.
Conservatives should be concerned with the END RESULT: if Arnold does't win, that will mean 8 years of Angelides destroying CA, which was just pulled back from the brink by Arnold.
I remind everyone of the great Vincent Lombardi Quote:
Winning isn't everything, it's the only thing.
FREEPER ACTIVISM If you can determine a public official doesn't have bond coverage, that could be an actionable offense in and of itself (depending on state law).
Also, if a public official who is bonded had previous financial problems---perhaps a bankruptcy or a firing for financial improprieties, etc---that they failed to reveal to bonding agents, that might subject them to legal penalties.
Classes covered by individual bonding include: Municipalities, counties, townships, school districts, ambulance districts, volunteer fire departments, community college districts, public universities, transit authorities, landfills, sewage treatment facilities, public works maintenance facilities, airports.
Now if and when bonded elected officials allowed government agencies to misuse tax dollars----- say the agency allowed illegal aliens using phony documentation to get government benefits, to obtain welfare, health coverage, education benefits, government-backed mortgages, to vote fraudulently on taxing and public bond issues ........this is classifed as fiduciary negligence, and could (1) violate the state's bonding regulations, and (2) the bonding requirements of the carrier.
This summer Schwarzenegger will showcase his Climate Action Plan, which includes a bill he's backing to cap the state's greenhouse-gas emissions. "He is the greenest governor in the country, bar none," says Ralph Cavanaugh of the Natural Resources Defense Council, who gave Schwarzenegger his personal endorsement.
You don't think there is just a teeny problem with the Mechista Villaraigosa endorsing Arnold and his agenda?
What does that tell you about Arnold's agenda, FO?
At least the guy on the right is funny.
.
If what I hear around here (Orange County) is any indication, Arnold is going to have a very, very tough time getting himself reelected.
I didn't vote for him in the primary and I will not vote for him in the general.

Well, it couldn't hurt for Republicans to take advantage of a rift between two Democrats, for once. The Dems have been planting the seeds and fanning the flames of division among Republicans, to improve their chances of winning. You certainly should know all about it, with your continuous attacks on Arnold, trying to sow division between Arnold and the conservatives, even when McClintock is running WITH Arnold -- division, which BENEFITS ANGELIDES and everyone knows that.
Arnold has already shown the predisposition to reneg on his support for McClintock.
I put "RINO" in quotes, because Arnold is NOT a RINO, but some claim he is,
Given that the majority of his appointments have been Democrats, this is one of the most dishonest posts I have ever seen on FreeRepublic.
then maybe Arnold will indeed be fed up enough with the so-called conservatives, who are never there to support him, that he won't lift a finger to help McClintock when he runs for governor. And don't kid yourself that it won't make any difference.
Plenty of conservatives were fool enough to be bullied into supporting him during the recall and now regret it. He repaid that support with the back of his hand.
By not supporting Arnold today, you may either get us Angelides for the next 8 years,
Ooo, more FEAR mongering. Given that this state recalled Gray Davis, this bald faced assertion has no support. Angeleides will be far worse than Davis ever dreamed.
"Arnold has already shown the predisposition to reneg on his support for McClintock."
===
Another assertion not supported by any facts.
Actually even shortly after the recall election, when McC ran against Arnold, Arnold went and did some major fundraising for Tom McClintock's reelection campaign.
It'll never happen conservatives remaining in CA won't stand for it.
Actually even shortly after the recall election, when McC ran against Arnold, Arnold went and did some major fundraising for Tom McClintock's reelection campaign.
Which, of course, has NOTHING to do with what I posted, which was about Arnold quite recently withdrawing support for Tom's campaign for Lieutenant Governor.
"One other thing: Arnold looks to be going solo in his first big campaign trip. "
===
BIG DEAL. Arnold and Tom are not joined at the hip.
This is a sign of nothing.
Only in the minds of those who are trying to drive a wedge between Arnold and Tom, is this the sign of Arnold not running with Tom.
Oh, wait, who are those who want to drive a wedge between Arnold and Tom? The Democrats.
Oops -- your Dem slip is showing -- again.
How can Phil Angelides beat Gov. Schwarzenegger in November? Let me count the ways
http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1649630/posts
No. 5:...."Exploiting the wedge between the governor and his running mate will irritate the Republican party faithful--and solidify Democrats fearful of the remotest possibility of McClintock ending up in the corner office."
Arnold CANCELED plans to run with the down ticket candidates as soon as he had the nomination. Most of them, except for Poisner, are conservatives.
THE FIRST MOMENT he had the opportunity, he abandoned them. That is a big deal.
