Biographical evidence suggests T.E. Lawrence was asexual with no interest in women but was not known to be actively homosexual. He was deeply plagued with guilt over the incident in Deraa where a Turkish Bey sought to sodomize him. In Seven Pillars of Wisdom he wrote that he successfully resisted the Bey's advances and received only a beating instead. But in another biography Lawrence wrote a haunting phrase: "in submitting to the Bey I gave away the only possession we are born into this world with; my bodily integrity."

After Deraa, Lawrence was absolutely pitiless about the Turks. The massacre of a retreating Turkish column outside destroyed Mazreel, as seen in the movie, was a collective depiction of several.
