An instructor reviewed a paper of mine at staff college and red-lined my use of "sex" when referring to male and female, stating I should use "gender" instead.
He's showing his ignorance.
"Gender" is a technical grammatical term used to clarify agreement between a noun and its modifiers.
If you want to distunguish between the sexes, the proper term is "sex."
