Stung by the NCAA allegation that its 'Fighting Sioux' nickname is disrespectful, University of North Dakota wants to sue.
GRAND FORKS, N.D. -- In their showdown over the use of an American Indian nickname and logo, the NCAA leads its series with the University of North Dakota 3-0.
But the Fighting Sioux are still fighting.
Trounced last year by an NCAA mandate to change its 80-year-old Fighting Sioux nickname or lose some post-season rights, then rebuffed twice on appeals, the university now wants to take the battle of wills into federal court. A defiant UND President Charles Kupcella will confer today in Williston, N.D., with the state attorney general and the State Board of Higher Education about suing the NCAA.
"I'm angry," Kupcella said before heading for the board meeting, which will be closed because it involves potential litigation. "This is a crime."
Kupcella recently sent a stinging letter to the NCAA in which he accused the association of "careless, irrational, arbitrary, capricious and ultimately harmful behavior."
He said he has broad support on campus and among alumni, but he acknowledged that some American Indians on campus and off oppose retaining the Sioux nickname and logo.

He looks like a guy you would want on your side.
Given the racial demographics of the Dakotas, I'd recommend that UND adopt the "Fightin Whiteys" nickname.
how is that any different than MI??
I wonder when somebody will go after the NCAA for anti-trust violation.
Not bad...but I still think they should change the name to the "Wussy Leftists." Then it wouldn't be offensive, right?
