WASHINGTON (Army News Service, June 15, 2006) – The Army’s 231st birthday brought hundreds of spectators to the Pentagon Courtyard June 14 for entertainment and remarks from senior leaders.
A cake-cutting kicked off the celebration, which was hosted by Army Chief of Staff Gen. Peter J. Schoomaker, Secretary of the Army Dr. Francis J. Harvey and Secretary of Defense Donald H. Rumsfeld.
“As we celebrate this occasion, I want to thank every Soldier in the U.S. and across the world,” said Rumsfeld. “My thanks to you, and my thanks to your families for all you’ve sacrificed to defend our country and preserve our free way of life.”
Harvey also thanked Soldiers for answering the Army’s call.
“Today’s celebration is dedicated to our boots on the ground. A celebration of our people, Soldiers – active, Reserve and Guard – Department of Army civilians, veterans, families, friends of the community and the communities that support them,” Harvey said. “It is the perseverance, dedication and courage of men and woman who have answered the call of duty that is key to achieving victory in the war on terrorism.”
Schoomaker administered the Oath of Enlistment to 10 future Soldiers from the Baltimore Recruiting Battalion.
“The Army birthday is a tribute to all America’s Soldiers, past, present and future,” added Schoomaker. “The timeless lessons of the past can and must inform, educate and professionally develop our Soldiers and leaders.”
Interactive Army displays were showcased throughout the courtyard. The Program Executive Office highlighted the Land Warrior, body armor and other modern equipment, and the Natick Soldier Center showcased the Future Force Warrior and Future Concept Warrior.
A food-sampling exhibit was available to media organizations and Pentagon employees. Samples included current and future MREs; the new “Hooah” bar, designed to delay fatigue and extend endurance; and “First Strike Rations,” designed to reduce weight and increase nutritional intake and mobility.
Country singer and USO celebrity Josh Gracin dominated the stage with a special musical performance following the cake-cutting. He dedicated his performance to Soldiers and praised them for their dedication and sacrifice.
“To be a part of an event like the Army Birthday is an honor,” he said.
Gracin autographed more than 500 photos for civilian and military fans at the Operation Tribute to Freedom display booth.
“We hope that our contribution to the celebration helped make the Army’s birthday even more special,” said Bernie Rone, director of celebrity recruiting for the USO. “Gracin’s performance is a great way to end a special day.”
