Correct, the admonition was against being a drunkard, not having a drink:

Romans 13:13
Let us behave decently, as in the daytime, not in orgies and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and debauchery, not in dissension and jealousy.

1 Corinthians 5:11
But now I am writing you that you must not associate with anyone who calls himself a brother but is sexually immoral or greedy, an idolater or a slanderer, a drunkard or a swindler. With such a man do not even eat.

1 Corinthians 6:10

. . .nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God.

Galatians 5:21

. . . and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.

Ephesians 5:18

Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery.

The key being excess drink.

What's the deal with the "greedy" thing? Does that include greed in the name of the church, like "give me, err, I mean the church more money so that I, err... I mean the church can buy a private jet so that I can fly around the country and beg for money for... um... the church."

I'm glad to see the swindlers called out there. I'm going to court tomorrow to try and get my money back from just such a one.

Does this mean that only Republicans can get into Heaven?

1 Timothy 3

1This is a true saying, If a man desire the office of a bishop, he desireth a good work. 2A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant, sober, of good behaviour, given to hospitality, apt to teach; 3Not given to wine, no striker, not greedy of filthy lucre; but patient, not a brawler, not covetous; 4One that ruleth well his own house, having his children in subjection with all gravity. . . .

Of course, this is from the qualifications for Pastor/Bishop, etc. in the ministry. The qualifications that follow for others in the ministry gradually are reduced in specificity - for example - Deacon is "not given to much wine".

The issue, as someone else posted, is excess/moderation. Unfortunately, simply the act of becoming drunk qualifies as sinful behavior, and thus a major stumbling block to those who do not know and trust the Lord Jesus Christ for their eternal life, as well as those who are influenced by such behavior. Thus the reason Baptists tend to object to alcohol use in general- the temptation and the appearance of evil.

If in the course of my seminary studies, a professor tries to convince me that there is no alcohol use in the Bible other than the negative illustrations of drunkeness and such, then I will have to disagree - there is even a reference in Proverbs 31 for the use of wine (or beer depending upon translation - and is probably technically more accurate...) for medicinal purposes.
