STAMFORD, Connecticut (Reuters) - Republican Rep. Christopher Shays (news, bio, voting record) cites his differences with President George W. Bush, produces a chart outlining his moderate voting record and pledges his independence from party leaders in Congress. ADVERTISEMENT
His Connecticut colleague, Republican Rep. Rob Simmons, says working with Democrats comes naturally in a district where voters favored Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry over Bush by 10 percentage points in 2004.
For Shays, Simmons and other Republicans running for Congress in Democratic-leaning or swing districts in November, playing down their party label and playing up their independence has become a matter of political survival in a year when "Bush" can be a dirty word.
"This would not be a close election if George Bush was popular. This would not be a close election if there wasn't a war in Iraq," said Shays, who is embroiled in a tight race with Democrat Dianne Farrell.
"The president isn't doing well, and that's hurting me," the 19-year House veteran, who distances himself from Bush but enthusiastically supports the Iraq war, told Reuters.

Shay is pretty much a self-important rectum from way back, isn't he?
Sounds like a RINO to me!
Bye-Bye Chrissy!!
OMG! The left *might* carry *blue* states! Happy days are here again!
Notice the difference between Rob Simmons and Chris Shays. While Simmons is a moderate Republican in the most heavily Democratic district held by a Republican, he refrains from Bush-bashing. Shays however, probably wouldn't stop attacking Bush if I paid him.
Oh please. Here in Arizona, Democrats never place their party affiliation on a campaign sign, while the Republicans always do. Dem Jim Pederson is now running for the Senate. Despite being the ex-head of the state party, a "D" is nowhere to be found on his campaign materials (except the little "d" in his last name :-).
Ya know, if these idiots would just do the right thing all the time, they'd be re-elected, anyway.
Just like their silly news stories that will start to come out in the next few months about "life-long republicans looking to vote Dem this election cycle"...blah, blah, blah.
You never see the converse of DEM's going to vote Republican (yet in the past several elections this has happened at a much higher rate).
Shays was blowing Clinton along with Monica back in '98, if I recall.
If it walks like a duck ......
The American Conservative Union rates him as (only) 20 for 2005 and lifetime of 45, as opposed to a more well known RINO (McPain) who at least rates 85 and 85 respectively.
Shay and Simmons? Republicans In Name Only who are ashamed to be called Republicans In Name?
they had better heed Karl Rove, who warned them the other day not to distance themselves from the President.
Connecticut ping!
