Johnny Miller's been complaining all day about that driver. Too much muscle on 18 cost him this tournament.

Ogilvy wins Open after Mickelson muffs 18

AP on yahoo

MAMARONECK, N.Y. - Geoff Ogilvy was an unlikely winner at the 106th U.S. Open on Sunday when the two leaders heading into the final hole fell apart.

Ogilvy, a 29-year-old Australian, shot a 2-over 72 for his first major victory after Phil Mickelson and Colin Montgomerie both double-bogeyed the 18th hole.

Montgomerie had a good shot to win the Open outright after making a long putt for birdie on the 17th to grab a share of the lead with Mickelson.

After Montgomerie's misfortune on 18, Mickelson appeared to be in good shape, but his tee shot went far wide left. After birdying holes No. 11 and 14, Mickelson had a 2-shot lead with three holes to play.

Mickelson was trying to join Tiger Woods as the only players in the last 50 years to win three straight majors.

Back to the old (pre-2004 Masters win) Phil -- reckless, stupid play the entire day. What did he hit, 2 fairways out of 18?

Ogilvy was the most consistent, and deserved the win.

Never been a Monty fan, but I was rooting for him today. (Would been his first victory on U.S. soil in his 100th try). Indecision with the short iron cost him on 18, which cost him the tourney.

I love it when the pros struggle.

Winged Foot members had big smiles on their faces the entire weekend.

Phil did not hit the driver at all today & he would not leave it in the bag when he needed to be safe on 18. He looked like a man who knew he couldn't hit it when he teed off on 18....that was horrible.

Yes its tru that nobody took this course, but thats what the US Open is all about....who falls apart the least.

With all the talk about Scott as the best yound Australian, people have overlooked Oglivy. He won the match play and now the Open...SCott hasn't done anything since the 04 Players.

If the season finished today, he'd win player of the year. His swing is a mirror to Scott's and his short game is better.

He just became America's Jean Van de Velde.

Well, the Van de Velde collapse was much worse -- the worst I've ever seen on one hole in a tough spot in a major. But before his 2004 Masters win Phil was certainly America's Greg Norman. .....and it appears he's found his old form again.

And what's with the goofy smile? He's been walking around with that thing for a couple years now, but it seems way out of place in the midst of performing epic choke jobs.

Mickelson didn't look well. I know this wasn't brought up but did you see the way he looked. My bet is the heat got to him.

He was overweight and he was drinking too much water. You could tell by the way he wasn't turning properly through his swing.

Then again. 3 iron off the tee, 6 iron to the pin and two putt and the tournament was his.

I was thinking the same thing...tension, the heat, a long week, and his extra 30lbs may have contributed. He didn't swing well all day though.

He's gone back to overswinging - did you see the slo-mo replay of the drive on 18? The clubhead was at belt level at the top - only John Daly goes back that far.
