I went through the Whittier Earthquake inside one of those hangars. It was like being inside a jello mold... the whole thing swayed back and forth.

Whoops, never mind. I thought they were talking about the blimp hangars at Tustin.

I dunno, but it reminds me of an old clinton joke - he falls in the flooded river, your choice is to save the president, or get a pulitzer-winning photo...
What shutter speed do use use?
About ten days, I guess...

What, are Polish jokes off-limits now? I missed the memo.

a book positing that the camera obscura technique is how Leonardo da Vinci created the Turin Shroud.Which would have been about 130 years after the Shroud's first public exhibition in Europe.
Cordially,

using 200 gallons of black-and-white developer solution and 600 gallons of fixer.
That's going to smell!
The great thing about digital photography: No long hours in a dark room, and no chemicals to smell or leave stains!

Is this at the El Toro air base? Irvine CA doesn't sound right, but I don't know of any other Marine air bases?

As I understand, we're not entirely certain that the Shroud that first appeared in the 12th century is the same one. There are chain-of-custody issues, IIRC, and also there were several holy cloths floating around Europe then (including the Mandylion, which might or might not be Shroud-sized).

This is how ignorant I am . . . I thought the term "Marine" was in reference to, well, water-based activities, in which one does not use planes (the things that need hangars).
I thought the Air Force was the plane group, the Navy was the boat group, the Marines was the sub group, and the Army was the truck group.

I had the same thought. I figured that it was the LTA (lighter than air) hanger at El Toro that was built in the 30s to house blimps. Man, that was one massive hanger.

no, no.
But you were actually closer than many give you credit for.
See, the Navy plainly sails on the deep blue Marine, but the Army only conquers the plains.
Now, the Marines do go trucking in ships when they sail, but their budget is from the Navy, so they always sub the Navy when they sell.
The Air Force, on the other hand, always takes their train over the planes.

Man, that was one massive hanger. They're still there... and there's two of them:
