Lately I've been envisioning the 2008 election cycle. I don't think it's too optimistic to imagine that by the spring of 08, in the height of the election season, that our troop levels will be drawing down significantly in Iraq. Imagine tickertape victory parades in major American cities as victories American liberators return home. Imagine this all happens while in Iraq, a democratically elected gubmint is up and running, basic utilties are functioning, we have an Arab ally in the ME. And then imagine what on earth the completely hapless DEMs are going to run on.

You may well be right. I still think election 2006! is way too far down the road to call yet. Keep in mind we'll probably have bases in Iraq for decades, and in Afghanistan. And keep in mind what I said about Iran. Something WILL be done about these guys. The question is, what? I'm not sure, if that happens right before an election, that would help any Republican---but it needs to be done.
