Angelides compares Schwarzenegger to Bush in new attack ad

Democratic gubernatorial candidate Phil Angelides likened Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger to President Bush in an attack ad released Wednesday that says, "Just like George Bush, Schwarzenegger's saddled us with billions in debt."
The commercial, which features a Terminator look-alike in a black leather jacket riding his motorcycle backward, is a response to a Schwarzenegger ad that said Angelides would take the state backward with tax increases if he is elected governor in November.
While it is true that Schwarzenegger has borrowed to cover operating deficits, much of that was done to cover the debt he inherited from his Democratic predecessor, Gov. Gray Davis.
Schwarzenegger's borrowing also was done with the help of Democrats. Nearly the entire Democratic establishment rallied behind Schwarzenegger's campaign to pass $15 billion in deficit financing bonds in 2004, which voters embraced by an overwhelming margin.
Matt David, a spokesman for Schwarzenegger's campaign, said Angelides' ad was a feint to avoid scrutiny of his own plans to raise taxes by $10 billion, a figure Angelides disputes.

Of course Angelides in his ad doesn't maneiont that he wants to raise taxes by billions.
Challenge for Angelides is to sell tax boost to a reluctant electorate
http://www.shns.com/shns/g_index2.cfm?action=detail&pk=TAXHIKE-06-08-06
Phil Angelides won his wicked brawl with state Controller Steve Westly for the Democratic nomination for governor, but now the state treasurer has to take his campaign call for higher taxes to a penny-pinching electorate that turned down a variety of pricey ballot measures Tuesday.
Voters not only rejected the controversial Proposition 82, which would have raised taxes on wealthy Californians to pay for universal preschool, but also defeated Proposition 81, a $600 million library bond measure that had no organized opposition.
The tax plan was popular with the liberal Democrats who carried Angelides to victory in the low-turnout primary election, but Westly and his supporters slammed a tax boost as both unnecessary and unworkable. Now Angelides has to make his pitch to a much wider audience of Republican and nonpartisan voters who are even less likely to applaud any plan to raise taxes.

Yes. Even the "only the rich will pay" BS argument didn't sell with prop 82. For whatever reason, the public hasn't entirely forgotten why Davis was recalled. IMO, more folks than just conservatives are concerned about runaway government spending (especially on goodies and entitlements). Perhaps this years property tax bills had something to do with this.

You really have to be a class A moronic liberal to think that it would be a good idea to have your candidate anywhere near the word debt. Especially being a Democrat in a state that has an absolute lock on the legislature.
But hey, let's entertain the thought here. Angelides, fresh from the position of state treasurer, overseeing the huge state deficit.. Hmm. Bad choice of topic, really. But ok, let's see what the campaign website says about reducing this debt..
.. ... ... .. ... .. .. .. search complete. Nothing. Zip. Zippo, Zilch. Nada.
"He got us into debt and I'm going to.." [silence.]
Cut spending? No, no mention of that. How about raising taxes? Ghads, no, no mention of that. But somehow, if you vote for me, I'll cut the debt.
Talk about playing on your weak side.

The really sad thing is that MOST people will not analyze this to the degree that you did. Sometimes I wish there were a "voter competency" test to screen folks wanting to register.

I thought the billions in debt was Gray-out's legacy.

That's a big "if" on Angelides. Figure 82 couldn't even pass in Reiner's home base of LA County. LA county I think will be the key and that is a big county with a lot of people there outside of the Westwood, Hollyweird, Santa Monica sphere.
The only counties I think Angelides will carry for certain will be S.F. and Alameda counties.
He'll get buried in the valley.
He won't carry the major coastal counties of Santa Clara, Orange, San Diego, Ventura and Contra Costa.
I really think most Californians are in a foul mood on costs these days and no one but the hard core commies want tax increases on a state level.
I was down in SoCal today and Ken and John on KFI were working a report on a 3 billion dollar pre school program California has and how an estimated 1.5 billion of the program has gone to fraudulent claims.
This really should be a blowout in favor of Arnold if it all comes down to taxes. Arnold for the better part has well positioned himself in the public mind as the guy against government waste and against unnecessary taxation. IMO.

Uh, dude, calm down. I agree that Angelides is a moronic liberal. But from there, your post is inaccurate.
The Treasurer does not authorize spending or borrowing. He is tasked only with issuing debt that the legislature enacts. While a liberal big spender, Angelides has never promoted debt. He opposed it when Gray Davis tried to do it and he opposed it when Arnold and Westly sold us Prop 57/58 and the $15 Billion bondage plan.
It might help to get the facts straight.

Elect Angelides and end liberal domination of the state within 4 years. Or vote for Arnie and keep them in power for the next 8, at the least.

Refresher on what?
I'm well aware of who Phil Angelides is going back to his start with Tom Hayden and Jane Fonda and their Campaign for Economic Democracy (along with Susan Kennedy, Arnold's Chief of Staff). He's a leftist supported by the left-most leftists. So what?
That still doesn't change what I posted: Angelides has been consistently against Borrowing to subsidize tax revenues and enable deficit spending. He instead favors raising taxes.
I oppose both borrowing and raising taxes. And I oppose Angelides.

Sure, let's get some facts straight. First, the Treasurer has a constitutional duty to prevent borrowing without a dedicated bond. Angelides never went to court to prevent Grayout and the legislature's over spending. That might be because of Angelides' huge investment of the State Pooled Money account into the dot bust, as well as voting on the CalPERs and CalSTRs' boards to also invest in the dot bust, bringing about an 18 billion dollar loss for the combined funds.
Money that had to immediately be paid back into the fund because of his guaranteed returns program. Money that cities, counties, schools and the state government had to pour in. Then he had the brilliant idea of a diversity investment program, as well as divesting profitable investments because of political ideology. Both of these concepts, added to the ever expanding health care components of CalPERs and CalSTRs means that cities, counties and school boards are still bleeding money into the program.
Atop of all of this, he actually worked to increase the payouts as well as reducing the time required for full vestment into the programs, ensuring that the money that was supposedly emergency in nature continues to come in at the same or higher rates.
Whoo. A $15 billion dollar bond, pushed by everyone in the legislature sans Tom McClintock (the sole vote against the budget). That's the tip of the iceberg called Angelides.
Look, you got a bug up your rump over Arnold. Fine. The primary's over, he's what's there. I'll be damned if I'm going to do anything to help Angelides bleed this state more for unions, and drive taxes higher to pay for his pet programs. He has been a financial nightmare for this state, and Wall Street has been punishing us for his mismanagement of the Treasurer's office ever since he got sworn in.

All of which does not support your original post or refute what I posted. Yes--he's a moron. He's a big spender. He did other evil things. As I said, I oppose him. BUT--We should able to win elections based on FACTS and ISSUES and the DIFFERENCE between candidates, not just raise our arms and scream about Angelides wanting to steal your first child.
And btw... the Majority of the Republican legislators voted against Prop 57/58, not just McClintock. Sorry dude. The only ones pushing for it were the Democrats (just like the upcoming Infrastructure bonds). Here's the Senate vote for Prop 57--Only 2 Republican turncoats voting for this crap and Feinstein campaigning for it.

They vote against the bonds, yet vote for spending the money. I'm afraid I don't see that great of a difference here.
