Somehow I doubt this. $1 million in $100 bills make a cube a foot on each side. You'd need 2 steamer trunks to haul $20 million.

They might have been 500-Euro notes. The '$' amount is likely a conversion on behalf of the newspaper.

BTW: I'd make my escape even easier with Euro notes.
