Vero Beach resident and Los Angeles Dodgers broadcaster Rick Monday will be the guest of Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, R.-Tenn., in Washington today, when the proposed constitutional amendment banning the desecration of the American flag is reintroduced. Joe Crankshaw of the opinion staff recently interviewed Monday about his feelings for the flag and the amendment. Q. On April 25, 1976, during the fourth inning of a game with the Dodgers, you were in center field for the Chicago Cubs at Dodger Stadium in the middle of the best season of your career. What did you see that afternoon?
A. I actually heard something before I saw anything. I heard some commotion in the stands off to my right from centerfield. I turned and I see the reason why. Two guys are running on to the field. They ran past the left fielder, Jose Cardenal. I saw one of them had an American flag that he took out from under his arm. He knelt down and spread it out on the ground. He pulled out something reflecting in the sun it looked like a very large can of lighter fluid and began to douse the flag. I started running toward the guys. Q. How did you feel when you saw what was about to take place, and what did you do and why?
A. What I saw them attempting to do was wrong; according to the way I was raised by my father and reinforced by six years in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve. I was angry.
