Well...your analogy is not a good one.

Nah, I think it's a good one.

There is a difference between accidents and slowly killing yourself through lack of control and laziness.

No one makes you participate in sports. No one makes you have kids. The only thing actually out of your control is infections, and even those are somewhat in your control.

Gluttony is a sin ya know.

So is selfishness and pride.

I kind-of agree with both of you. It's unfair to allow those who accept higher levels of risk, whether through sporting activities or gluttony and laziness, to do so at others' expense. If one chooses to accept risk, one should bear the increased cost of that risk through higher premiums. For parents, this is indeed the case: people with children pay much higher premiums (in most cases).

On the other hand, in a free society, people have to right to assume personal risk, such as smoking, drinking, mountain-climbing, or eating lard. They also have the obligation to pay the consequences for assuming said risks.
