Jubilant Soccer Fans Celebrate In Huntington Park

HUNTINGTON PARK, Calif. Jubilant soccer fans streamed onto Huntington Park streets after Mexico's 3-1 World Cup victory over Iran.

About 500 fans streamed onto Pacific Boulevard, causing the California Highway Patrol to close its intersection with Florence Avenue.

"It seems to be a focal point where everyone tends to be drawn to, so we are restricting traffic flow," said CHP acting Sgt. David Nelms, adding that the similar past gatherings have "stopped being peaceful."

Soccer fans jammed several establishments to watch Mexico play Iran. La Raza 97.9 FM out of East Los Angeles sponsored viewing parties at Leonardo's Casino, also known as Club La Boom at 6611 Alameda Street and at El Gallo Giro at 7148 Pacific Boulevard.

One man was arrested for public intoxication. The crowds mostly disappeared by 4:30 p.m.

Police had to wrestle for control over rowdy soccer fans in years past. Dozens were arrested in 1998 in the wake of Mexico's victory over the Netherlands.

I thought the game was over with this morning. And La Raza 97.9 FM out of East Los Angeles...that is an interesting name for a station.

I'm going to tell you something...I see these Mexicans work, everyday, I'm looking out my window right now at 7:30am. They're up at 5:00am here doing the work that union people won't do. That's just the truth. They work their asses off. Let's at least be honest in this debate. I don't work to the bone. The people I'm looking at do. Do I think they should be here? no. But I won't let you perpetuate a lie that isn't true. Or disparage their character. Some of the best construction and landscaping work I've ever seen has been done by Mexicans who are professional, hardworking and extremely nice. Some of the worst, by Americans who are lazy and arrogant.

Well, I'll tell you something, my husband works DAMN HARD to pay HIGH taxes and so on because our city continues to bear the burden of illegals coming over and using the schools, hospital, govt. housing and all those give aways! You drive by a school and you'll see lots of cars with mexican plates picking up their kids. Living on a border town SUCKS and it has gotten out of hand. Don't know how much more of this crap American's can take before this country goes BROKE! OBTW, those kids get grants to go to college and WE, families who fork over for taxes have to pay through the nose for their education. Funny ain't it, but illegals will always be loyal to their country and flag!

I absolutely DESPISE soccer. It's one of the most boring mass-played sports ever created, IMHO. Baseball, Football, and Basketball are plenty for me.

I agree about the problem. I'm the first in line. My point was disparaging the notion that Mexicans who come here don't really want to work, they want to sit back and get benefits. That's just not true. They want to work and when they work, they work harder and longer than any Americans do. That's all.

It's all about La Raza.

These soccer fans -- hard working thought they may be -- have NO interest in becoming Americans!

A lot these guys are Puerto Rican or Dominican baseball fans; but I'm guessing that a few of them are soccer fans.

I used to be on a Mexican soccer mailing list with a sargent from Camp Pendleton.

Unfortunately, the US will not be playing Mexico until late into the tournament; assuming that one of the teams is not knocked out first.

The US is in a tough group and we could use the automatic win that Mexico hands us at sea level.

If you have a chance to go to the link, please search for the local newscast.

The fans are waving Mexican flags and Mexican flags only.
