Grits work on fire ant mounds, but the weather has to be dry for a while before and after treating. A&M has come up with some decent temporary tools. Amdro works for treating and broadcast deterrent. Orthene smells horrid, but does a job on huge mounds when drenched in. Diesel fuel is safer than gasoline, but kills everything. Not good if you have crops or cows.

I put Eco-Whacko alert right on the title in big bold letters, what more do you want? I'm just learning about tags, if someone points me to an article on using tags I'll read it, for now all I've learned is from viewing the source code of other people's posts.

As for the fire ants, I may not be able to kill them but I can sure make things miserable enough for them to move on. Ants find their way home by following scent trails. When I see a mound I get a shovel, lift the entire mound up and fling it into the woods. The other insects feed on the eggs and the living ants wander around until they starve to death.
