They aren't very helpful in terms of ancient tribal names or regions. Abruzzo is in central Italy on the eastern side of the Appenines, generally NE of Rome, and including the coastal town of Pescara. The ancient peoples who lived in the more mountainous parts were the Sabines, the Aequi and the Marsi. The Marsi were ringleaders in the Italian or Social War of 90-88 B.C. when many of the Italians tried to win independence from Rome (the name "Social" means it was a war against Rome's allies, socii).

Early in 2005 there was talk of naming one of the peaks in this area in honor of Pope John Paul II, but he died soon afterwards, and I don't know if they followed through on the idea.
