'Passion' Ranked 'Most Controversial' Film

Mel Gibson's "The Passion of the Christ" ranks as the most controversial film of all time, according to Entertainment Weekly. The magazine ranks the 25 films that have most shocked, disgusted and divided moviegoers, in its June 16 issue, on newsstands Monday.

EW writes that Gibson's grisly depiction of Jesus' betrayal and crucifixion ignited "a culture-war firestorm unrivaled in Hollywood history." Despite - or to some degree, because of - the religious uproar, the 2004 film grossed over $370 million at the U.S. box office.

Coming in second is Stanley Kubrick's "A Clockwork Orange." Kubrick's 1971 futuristic film was famous for a violent scene during which "Singin' in the Rain" played as the soundtrack. Reports of copycat crimes led to the movie's withdrawal from distribution in Britain.

Oliver Stone has the unique distinction of landing twice on the list: 1991's "JFK," ranked at No. 5, and 1994's "Natural Born Killers," at No. 8.

"The Da Vinci Code," now in theaters, charts at No. 13 for the debates spawned by its tale of an alleged Catholic cover-up. Another recent film, "United 93," ranks at No. 16 because of concerns that it came too soon after the Sept. 11 terror attacks.

Also among the 25: "Fahrenheit 9/11," "Deep Throat," "The Last Temptation of Christ," "The Deer Hunter," "Basic Instinct," "Do the Right Thing" and "Kids."

Oh, that's just frickin' stupid. What about ten years from now? Or 35 years, like Clockwork Orange? It's only this list because leftists hate to see honest, red-blooded Americans get pissed at the terrorists again and maybe see Bush's approval ratings go up and Congress remain in Republican hands. That's all the reason to put it on the list. Next year won't matter to them.

Yes, but of all the 'controversial' films I see listed here, the only one Hollywood hates is 'Passion.' They applaud and revere and celebrate the others. Why, pray tell, do they condemn only 'Passion'...?

Well, I guess if "Kiss Of The Spider Woman" and "Brokeback Mountain" aren't
topping the list...homosexuality is now officially mainstreamed.

No worldwide figure

World wide was about $241 million, about $612 million total box office. That was over 22 weeks. Da Vinci Code is at $578 million total in 21 days.

Oh were they concerned when Lumpy's F-911 came out?

If this list is legitamate then the movies Caligula and Deep Throat will be on it. As I recall, Deep Throat was banned in what was it, 40 states, and Caligula, anyone who's seen that thing knows it's self-explanatory

Gibson's grisly depiction

Have these morons seen any Hollywood horror movies lately? They're truly grisly - THE PASSION's graphic but historically accurate portrayal of Christ's torture isn't.

One wonders if "Triumph of the Will" is in there somewhere.

That's OK - Christ is the most polarizing figure in history.

You can either choose heaven or hell, but you will have to make a choice.

Besides popularizing a pedantic and petulant style of cultural criticism that has unfortunately now become the norm, one of the most maddening things about Entertainment Weekly is the short term memories of the people involved. They seem to think that there were no movies of note made before the "Easy Riders and Raging Bulls" era. FWIW, the movies of Bunuel could easily fill out the entire top ten, beginning with L'Age D'Or, which inspired religously-motivated riots almost on the level of the Mohammed cartoons.

Both Victim starring Dick Bogarde and Visconti's Death in Venice were far more controversial, especially the former, since it was made in England at time when homosexuality was still illegal.

"That's OK Christ is the most polarizing character in history."

Good point. When we get to heaven, Mel Gibson will get a "Well Done", and the heroes of "93" will get a heroes welcome {some of them anyway}, but most of the rest on that list will still be considered disgusting.

Surprisingly, missing from the list were the films Dude, Where's My Car?

Freddy Got Fingered

and virtually the entire film catalog of Whoopie Goldberg

It is only appropriate. Jesus's message is the most subversive of all time. Pagens then and now have refused to accept it. The historian Albert Toynbee said it well:
"The Christian Church was the principal target for the parting strokes of a Hellenic dominant minority which turned savage in its death-agony; for this dying pagan ruling class refused to face the heart-rending truth that it was itself the author of its own downfall and destruction. Even in articulo mortis it tried to salvage a last shred of self-respect by persuading itself that it was perishing as the victim of a dastardly assault on the part of the proletariat
