You know not every person here is an illegal that would take advantage of this program. Many people here legally will benefit. I keep hearing how people are tired of people not speaking English. This sounds like a great idea. Better yet since the Prez is talking about faith base and volunteer groups being involved, its sounds like a Good opportunity for folks to get involved.

I agree that LEGAL immigrants need to learn english and assimilate as a prerequisite to citizenship. I disagree that I should pay for it. I disagree with any program that benefits ILLEGAL immigrants.

Why do you assume they are all illegal that would participate. There are many here with proper green cards etc. Plus I can't really see how this a waste of money. In fact he trying to do this through volunteer and faith based groups.

catholicfreeper, I live near an underground railway run by the catholic church. it is a Retreat house during the weekend and a underground railway for illegals during the week. Busted in 1988. Back at it by 1990! Busted 2001. Back at it to this day. We are a nation of laws! Do you not agree?

If I read this right, we are taking money from Home Land Security to teach english. Well so much for security. Guess we will be teaching english, table manners, proper dress, etc. I just don't believe what Pres. Bush is doing with the illegal immigrant thing.

I firmly believe that the primary element in dealing with this veritable invasion is to gain control of our borders. That will weed out the bad guys who come across. After that it is important to inculcate legal immigrants with the truth about the pinnacle of Western Civilization-the United States of America. Most people coming in from Latin America have been taught lies about us, and their children are being taught lies about us in the public schools.

I don't really care if hey are legal or not.
When you decide to legally go live in another country, you learn their language too, ON YOUR OWN DIME!
It's not my business to pay for you to get educated in English with my taxes, when I have my own family to feed.

...Douglas was in the country illegally, although he was working as a bouncer at a local Chinese restaurant.

I've been in some tough, violent buffet lines but, a bouncer?

OMAHA, Neb. -- President Bush yesterday announced the creation of a task force to expand English, civics and history lessons as he pushes his plan for longtime illegal aliens to gain a path to citizenship.

First it was amnesty, then it was the granting of Social Security benefits earned while using fake IDs, now it's the "No Illegal Alien Left Behind" education program.

Brilliant, Mr. Bush.

I just don't believe what Pres. Bush is doing with the illegal immigrant thing.

Neither do I, but more importantly, why is he doing it? Instead of fighting bureaucracy and using existing programs (English and history classes abound in this country), we are creating one specifically for Spanish speaking illegals? Not fair to other immigrants and definitely not fair to taxpayers. Any chance this is adding even more benefits to those here illegally or am I imagining it? What about utilizing our nation's colleges where illegals already get preferential treatment over citizens for classes.

Obviously not! Your an Open-borders advocate that's planning on making a killing off the influx of goods and manpower. Sorry, but your part of the problem that got us into this mess.

Sorry I am not an open border advocate at all. I know its tempting to classify all people that support The Presidents view as that but its not factually correct.

I keep hearing how people are tired of people not speaking English. This sounds like a great idea.

There have been ESOL programs in every adult ed program in this area (with a large percentage of Hispanics) for at least 20 years. You can make programs available, but there's not much incentive when virtually every business and government agency caters to Spanish-only speakers ("Press 2 for Spanish."), and when you choose to speak English, chances are you will get someone with a heavy Spanish accent who doesn't speak English well.

Why does the government need a new program when the one that's been offered for years apparently isn't being utilized? It's PR fluff.

If Bush is serious, let him prohibit the USCIS Offiice of Citizenship website  from offering "Quick Civics Lessons " and "Sample U.S. History and Government Questions" for the the naturalization test in Spanish.

President Bush has the Meirs complex in a bad way. What is it with this President when he's so obviously wrong? Like the Meirs debacle, he first has to dig his heels in before realizing their is no way to win. Pathetic with the mandate we had coming out of 2004.

Its a gigantic waste of money. Who is going to monitor whether these people are attending their ESL classes and history classes? Will there be some sort of certification for a school to administer the courses? There are a lot of questions to be answered.

It is smoke and mirrors. These programs would be susceptible to fraud because there would be no agency to monitor the schools and monitor to whether these people are attending these classes .

"That would slow the flow of cheap labor into the country."

Not to mention interfere with the treasonous plans for the North American Union, erasing of borders, and replacement of the dollar with the Amero.

Sure glad our guys are in charge...
