TRENTON, N.J. - Commentator Ann Coulter's incendiary words about outspoken 9/11 widows have led two state lawmakers to calls for a boycott of her book in the widows' home state of New Jersey.
Assemblywomen Joan M. Quigley, D-Hudson, and Linda Stender, D-Union, on Thursday called on New Jerseyans to stop buying the book, "Godless: The Church of Liberalism," and for retailers in the state to stop selling it.
"Coulter's vicious characterizations and remarks are motivated by greed and her desire to sell books. By making these claims, she proved herself worse than those she is attempting to vilify - she is a leach trying to turn a profit off perverting the suffering of others," the two assemblywomen said in a statement.
A spokeswoman for Crown Forum, the publisher of Coulter's book, did not immediately return calls for comment Thursday.
In her new book, Coulter writes that a group of New Jersey widows whose husbands perished in the World Trade Center act "as if the terrorist attacks happened only to them."
She also wrote, "I've never seen people enjoying their husbands' deaths so much."
The comments drew criticism Wednesday from Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, D-N.Y., who said the book should be called "Heartless," and New York's Republican Gov. George Pataki, who said he was stunned by the remarks.
Coulter appeared Tuesday on NBC's "Today" show and stuck by her stance, saying the women used their grief "to make a political point."
Her criticism was aimed at four New Jersey women she dubbed "The Witches of East Brunswick," after the town where two of them live.
The women - Kristen Breitweiser, Lorie Van Auken, Mindy Kleinberg and Patty Casazza - have spent the years since the 2001 terror attacks supporting an independent commission to examine government failures before the attack. During the 2004 presidential race, they endorsed Democrat John Kerry.
I've always had a problem with the fact that we made those people not killed MILLIONAIRES....why should tragedy make anyone a millionaire....
when I donated to the differant funds...Red Cross...NYPD and NYFD etc....my intention was to help those who were really finacially strapped.....
my intention was never to make any of them rich beyond their dreams...
I agree. Coulter has a good point that the Jersey Girls should not be exempt from criticism when they try to use their status for political purposes and for advocacy of a debatable point of view, but unfortunately she undermines the point by going too far with the ad hominem stuff.
I'm going along with this boycott.
I promise not to buy my copy in New Jersey.
Exactly.
Shhh!
Placing what she actually said in its context is precisely what Breitweiser, these assemblywomen, Hewitt and Peach do not want you to do.
Anne on Cavuto right now
Figures that the sewer pit of the world would come out with this.....
This state stinks as do the people that run it......
Second, liberals are the world's largest hippocrits. They spend their whole lives pressing for the government to regulate everything and then cry "dangerous governmnent intrusion" when the FCC wants to ban trash from TV. They always complain about censorship and meanspiritedness but their always the first to want to stop speech they disagree with and they are always disagreeable in doing so.
#1. It's considered freeper etiquette to ping the freeper you are mentioning in your post.
#2. I'm delighted that right thinking conservatives like Laura Ingraham and Hugh Hewitt have condemned Ann's remarks.
#3. Which part of what she wrote about the women being glad their husbands were dead or that their husbands were about to divorce them do you think I did not place in context?
LOL! Who is getting into the gutter with the Left, exactly?
And the sad thing is, her comment will likely win the Jersey Girls another round of air-time on "Hardball."
my thoughts ex-a-ctly......
Too bad she didn't include your "the fruits of}. Not a word is being said about anything else in the book. The left will not read it, only argue about this over the top statement. The right will read it...preaching to the choir.
Can you read? A freeper thinks because the left attacks the children of our military that what Ann wrote is acceptable.
And I'll wait while you try to answer #3 in my question to you above.
A perfect example of meanspirited, disrespect is that jerk (I have no clue what his name is) who bashed the President at the White House correspondents dinner.
O'Reilly had her stutterin' and stammerin' today as he suggested that she might have used some more temperate language. She accused him of "insulting" her when he suggested that she decided to go after the Jersey Girls to sell books.
The irony was delicious: Coulter accusing someone of insults. Her vitriol got the best of her with this latest attack, and she has truly crossed a line that, while she will sell lots of books in the short term, will cause her to be viewed as in the same fringe as Michael Weiner.
"Would prefer not to be on her s**t list."
Well Hillary is now on it. Bottom line is, the Jersey Girls wanted to play and not be held accountable for their actions. Now that they are being held accountable, they want to take their ball and go home.
Ann hit the nail on the head when she said that the husbands were about to divorce their wives? She has no way of knowing this.

If ya'll want to get into the gutter with the left, have at it.
Okay, I guess that I will have to buy her book right now at amazon.com instead of waiting for my birthday!
