A 5-month-old boy from Washington, D.C., was recovering Tuesday evening at Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh in Oakland after receiving part of his mother's liver.
The case of Peter Hayes has attracted national attention because his mother, Catherine Herridge, is a national correspondent for Fox News Channel.
Herridge's story has been told in recent days by Fox host Greta Van Susteren.
Herridge, 42, donated part of her liver to save her son from a life-threatening illness that blocks the bile duct. The disease, known as biliary atresia, causes bile to build up in the liver and poison it.
Herridge and her son underwent surgery simultaneously yesterday. Both were doing well afterward, according to surgeons at Children's and the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.
Dr. Amadeo Marcos, clinical director of transplantation at UPMC's Starzl Transplantation Institute, said Herridge was in extremely good condition after a five-hour operation in which he removed about 20 percent of her liver. She likely will be discharged by the end of the week, he said.
The new liver will cure Peter, said Dr. George V. Mazariegos, director of pediatric transplantation at Children's.
"We're very encouraged," he said. "Everything is going as well as we could have hoped for."
....snip ....
Hayes said the family likely will remain in Pittsburgh for six to 10 weeks. The couple have another son, Jamie, 20 months. ...

My cousin did this for his mother 2 years ago - and today they are both alive and well. The amazing thing is that the donor's liver will actually grow back to its normal size after the surgery....
Great story. She does not look 42 tho.
We wish mother and son well, and pray for speedy recovery and long life!!!
She definitely came to the right place to have the procedure done:-)
Major FOX Fox.
Wonderfully good news. Thank the Lord!
Don't mean to nitpick, but recover? Of course we hope they do, but that's a premature announcement. Is the LSM that eager to move this story off the first page (or at least out of Section A)?
I've been following this on FOX. KH my favorite reporter. God bless her and her family.
Wonderful story, and I'm so glad the little guy is doing so well.
As for mom, I don't know what 42 is "supposed to" look like, but she sure looks like early 40's to me. But I like her. Very professional and classy.
Now that shows Motherhood at its finest...God bless them both.
How beautiful. To give birth to a new life and then save that life too. And thank God for the miracles modern science can accomplish.
I agree, she sure doesn't look 42 and when was she pregnant with 2 little boys? Seems she's been on Fox without a maternity leave. She's one of my favorites.....a class act.
Please FReepmail me if you want on or off my FoxFan list. *Warning: This can be a high-volume ping list at times.
I'm sure she'll get good aftercare too.
Thanks for the ping!
