Narrow focus draws 'PG' rating for Baptist-backed film

The Motion Picture Association of America is crystal clear when it describes why its "PG" rating exists _ it's a warning flag.

"The theme of a PG-rated film may itself call for parental guidance," states the online explanation of the rating system. "There may be some profanity in these films. There may be some violence or brief nudity. ... The PG rating, suggesting parental guidance, is thus an alert for examination of a film by parents before deciding on its viewing by their children. Obviously such a line is difficult to draw."

Disagreements are a given. The Christian moviemakers behind a low-budget film called "Facing the Giants" were stunned when the MPAA pinned a PG rating on their gentle movie about a burned-out, depressed football coach whose life _ on and off the field _ takes a miraculous turn for the better.

Since they gave "The Passion" an NC-17 it is no wonder this one is PG. In fact it should be PG-13! Can't have young skulls full of mush getting corrupted by Jesus.

"decided that the movie was heavily laden with messages from one religion and that this might offend people from other religions."

Who thinks that "other religions" are going to SEE this movie?

And if they do, WHO CARES?

Of COURSE *SOMEONE* is always going to be offended!

(Can't wait to see NCAA slap a "G" on a Moslem Jihadist movie!)

I had thought the Passion was rated R, for one thing, if it had been NC-17, then no one would have been allowed to take children to the theaters to see it. That said, the Passion needed to be rated R because while it is a good movie, with a positive message and all that, the fact is, there is an unbelievable amount of violence in it, and while the violence is a portrayal of historical events, it is violence that is nontheless disturbing. I don't believe any child should watch a movie like that without an adult with them, never mind the message, because that film lends itself to necessitate adult supervision. If the Passion had not been about the life of Jesus with everything that it had in it, suppose it had been the story of a typical Roman crucifixition, chances are it would have garnered an NC-17. Only reason I think that film should have been R is because it was about Jesus, because no one who has seen it can say it's not intense and no one who has seen it cannot say it has not affected them in a profound way, unless they're completely coldhearted.

"But the scene that caught the MPAA's attention may have been the chat between football coach Grant Taylor _ played by Alex Kendrick _ and a rich brat named Matt Prader. The coach says that he needs to stop bad-mouthing his bossy father and get right with God.

The boy replies: "You really believe in all that honoring God and following Jesus stuff? ... Well, I ain't trying to be disrespectful, but not everybody believes in that."

The coach replies: "Matt, nobody's forcing anything on you. Following Jesus Christ is the decision that you're going to have to make for yourself. You may not want to accept it, because it'll change your life. You'll never be the same."

Who wrote this "script" - Jack Chick?!

Who thinks that children are going to see porn?

OK, bad example. But the MPAA is supposed to rate flicks based on the *entire* moviegoing audience, not just those who will set out to see it. Otherwise, "Natural Born Killers" would have gotten a "G."

Based on the reason the Sony bastards rated the movie, Al Gore's movie should be rated the same since it is also guilty of 'proselytizing'. It is after all dealing with one of the Church of Liberalism's main tenets: global warming.
