Shepard Smith Smears Swift Boat Vets
Media Monitor ^ | 6/7/2006 | Cliff Kincaid

Posted on 06/07/2006 5:55:04 AM PDT by Mike Bates

While some press attention has been focused on the seeming odd-couple of Rupert Murdoch raising money for Hillary Clinton, another fascinating relationship has apparently been developed between Fox News and Hugh Hefner's Playboy. Fox News' Neil Cavuto aired an interview with Hugh Hefner on May 4, on the grounds that the announcement of his "Playmate of the Year" was "business news," and Fox News anchor Shepard Smith is interviewed in the June issue of Playboy magazine.

Asked about Internet stories that "lack veracity" but which serve as news. Smith replies, "Swift Boats," as if the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth had been engaged not in getting out the truth about John Kerry's military career and dubious war crimes charges, but in smearing the Democratic Senator and 2004 Democratic presidential candidate.

I'm sure you all remember that Fox News is supposed to be the conservative channel.

SNIP

It is strange in the sense that Smith talks about his "group" at Fox News, which wants objective news coverage, and other nameless people who don't seem to agree. However, he denies Fox has a conservative agenda, says he's never been asked to push a conservative point of view, and that he loves and trusts Bob Schieffer of CBS News.

Except for the devotion to Schieffer and the smear of the Swift Boat vets, the exchanges are mostly irrelevant and beside the point, which is that a Fox News anchor had made Playboy into a "respectable" forum. I suspect it is part of the same plan that involved Fox News media personalities such as Bill O'Reilly and Sean Hannity interviewing Howard Stern, who has attracted millions of listeners by talking dirty. This is the kind of audience that is supposed to count.

We were just laughing at the guy a couple of nights ago. When is he going to give up his Katrina story...I'm expecting, and today was the 235th day, 6th hour and 22 seconds since we were standing on the bridge outside the SuperDome.

I can't stand the guy. Brit Hume always looks like he ready for an all out belly laugh when he introduces "Shep" one of the former Three Stooges who even was so stupid he couldn't make the cut with that slap-stick group.

BTW, I've always thought he wore far too much make-up. He certainly is not a man's man, or a woman's man either.

"...especially those that discuss the history of the Old West. I wish I was back in that era sometimes, home on the da range, and all that."

The Westerns Channel, m'boy! It's part of the Encore series of channels. It's my one REAL reason for still having a big TV. I have so many 'B' westerns on DVD now I running out of room in my cabinet. Yeah, I know; they're only movies, not the real historical stuff. But they're fun to watch and they do fill a void in this old American West/Civil War history buff's pit.

Heck, I even forgot there is an A&E until you mentioned it. Used to watch that channel when it showed English mysteries, but haven't seen it in a long time.

It's funny how now there are so many channels it's easy to forget about some of 'em. Or maybe that's just old age.

While I agree with what you are saying, I know when I first had access to FNC, there was a great deal of time responding to stories on other networks and trying to give the conservative point of view in addition. I recall that they would fairly state the way it was reported on the other channels, and then add the other side of the argument. it was when they focused on balancing the record among all of the MSN that they gained viewers.

They can be giving libberal views if they want, but they need to counterpoise conservative views at the same time.

Apparently he drove his car into a female reporter when she stood there to protect a parking place. I wonder how many of us could do that, get arrested, and keep our jobs.

The subset of importance on the murder of the student is that the killer was a sex offender with a criminal record who was released early from prison.

We need to keep insisting that the minimums for sexual offenders be increased and there be no early release under any circumstances.

This murdering scum has a long criminal record.

Whatever happened to three strikes and you're out.

A little while back, the Western channel started showing the circa 1960 "Unforgiven" with Audrey Hepburn and Audie Murphy. One of my favorite non-John Wayne westerns.

Personally I would rather watch Anderson Cooper than Shep Smith.

There is something deviously unsettling about Shep.

"Used to watch that channel when it showed English mysteries"

That's what I used to watch. Once they were taken off A&E lost my interest.

Someone else here mentioned the Military Channel. I watch it occasionally, but again, the shows are repeated ad-infinitim. That's a big turn off for me.

The media is never going to stop talking about Katrina. It's their club to use against the President.

They certainly don't care one bit about the people who were harmed by the lack of leadership in Louisiana.

"Very seldom watch FNC anymore, and NEVER Sheperd Smith"

Agree with you about Schlep (as in "Tramp") but still like Cavuto and Gibson and occasionally, watch Hume.

By the time you reach a certain age, you don't remember seeing them the first time.

O'R kept his job at FNC after being accused of sexual harrassment of a fellow employee. He settled out of Court but his disgusting behaviour was certainly cause for firing.

Evidently FNC doesn't have a morals clause in their contracts.

O'R's ratings actually went up after the accusations were made public.

Shep comes out of the closet, a little.

This isn't news. Watching him only a little while is enough to tell you that he is liberal. He also is very talented at what he does.

Yep, that's a fine one. I now have all 6 of the Bud Boettischer directed Westerns he did in the '50's with Randolph Scott on DVD. It took me close to a year to get them all but it finally happened. If you want good solid Westerns with good writing (Burt Kennedy) and early appearances by some later stars, these are well worth the time:

Seven Men From Now
Decision At Sundown
The Tall T
Ride Lonesome
Comanche Station
Buchanan Rides Alone

Boy, I think after the wife leaves for work I'll just haul one out and watch it. It's gonna be a fine day!

Shep is worthless. His Katrina coverage should have got hime fired. Put Laurie Dhue in his place.

FNC definitely trying to reach the Jerry Springer generation.

LOL! Well, I'm almost 63, and I haven't reached that 'certain age' yet. Mercy!

I love history (American 19th Century) and also read a great deal. So, that makes up for my intolerance of repetitive TV fare.

Hume is at his best on the panel for Fox News Sunday. Gibson is good. I wish his show would be repeated later instead of O'Reilly since I often watch Kudlow instead of Gibson. Cavuto is worth watching.
