June 7, 2006 -- WASHINGTON - Conservative rabble-rouser Ann Coulter created an uproar among 9/11 victims' families yesterday after she charged in her new book that a group of "self-obsessed" politically active widows are enjoying their husbands' deaths.

The razor-tongued blond polemicist made unflattering remarks about the high-profile widows who liked to call themselves the "Jersey girls." In Coulter's latest book, "Godless," she calls them "harpies" and the "Witches of East Brunswick."

Later I lent the book to several English speaking Germans (and one Brit), only one of them being a die-hard conservative (the Brit). Most of them don't know the first thing about American politics, but Ann's style got through to them, anyway: They all loved the book. Clearly, this woman had something important to say, and they all wanted to learn more about it :-)

Thanks for that account of your experience. It just confirms that predicting people's attitudes and responses is much more problematic than some here assume.

For me, it distills down to this simple logic: if Coulter's methods were not effective, the Left would simply ignore her.

Notice that the New York Daily News article you posted as # 16 didn't even mention the fact that the Jersey Girls did partisan commercials for the Democrats in the '04 campaign. This is an important omission, because their own actions transformed them from bereaved widows to Democratic politicos, thus making them legitimate political targets. Of course, since the Daily News is owned by Clintonista tycoon Mort Zuckerman, the writer of the article is probably due a nice bonus for leaving that key fact out.

Still, Coulter's speculation on the husbands' divorce plans and possible appearances in Playboy magazine go a bit beyond the pale. A more alert editor may have saved Ann from some of the abuse the MSM lefties are heaping on her.

I’m sorry to read that. While not always a great fan of Ann’s approach, I generally agree with here positions. If this is true, then here critics are right. She’s doing nothing more than giving life to conservatives as a bunch of bigots. Veronica might know if she’s expressed these opinions before.

Obviously we can't judge the wives faiths from their husbands, but I don't know what else to look to. I'm not going to phone them.

From the employers sites listing memorial services, we've got two services in Synagogue, Kenneth (Lorie) Van Auken and Alan (Mindy) Kleinberg. Two Catholic masses, Richard (Monica) Gabrielle and John (Patty) Casazza.

Have to play the name game, a favoite when identifying Jews, with Ron (Kristen) Breitweiser. Parents, Frederick and Geraldine, siblings, Rick, Christian, and Mary. Jews don't name their children Christian and Mary very often, and Kristen is identified as Swedish, so I'd guess non-Jew. They were married on the beach, so I'll give them to the new agers.
