They don't speak German or Spanish. That's the point.

They said they wouldn't accept people ordering by pointing at the menu--people have to know the name of the dish in English and order it that way.

If they attract any foreign tourists, then it would be a big help to their cashiers to learn the 20 words that mean "cheese steak" in Spanish, French, and German. If they don't draw any tourists, then this is just a publicity stunt that makes Philadelphia look unwelcoming without actually advancing assimilation which happens anyway over a generation or two.

Well, since there are 2 choices, you could actually show them a sandwich wit and witout. I went to Germany, and I having taken the language in school for years, I could get along, my hubby is a first generation german. He was fine also. But, when you travel abroad and don't know the language, you take a little book to help out. With and without aren't very hard words to look up.

You are right, Europeans are very nice when you attempt to speak their language when talking or asking them questions over there.

If the menu is in Spanish, I order in Spanish. I don't ask "What's the English word for Taco"?

Provolone cheese-steak... that sounds real good, I may have to get one for lunch.

Remember when "Se Habla Espanol" signs in front of businesses were uncommon... and then common? Well, I'm just waiting for the counter "We Speak English" signs to appear. [/cynicism]

I remember a coffee shop in Rome with a sign that stated as such:

SI PARLA ITALIANO
WE SPEAK ITALIAN
SE HABLA ITALIANO
NOUS PARLONS ITALIEN
WIR SPRECHEN ITALIENER

You might ask, though, what the difference between a chimichanga and a burrito is, assuming you don't know.

A lot of restaurants feel that the tourist dollar/euro isn't worth the headaches.

What so tough about going to a counter and saying Wit or Witout.

OK, from a native Arizonan, "Wit or Witout" what?

I've travelled through a number of European countries in which English was not the primary language. If I wasn't with my guide/translator, I fully expected to run into some snags when conversing with the locals. That's what God invented pocket translators for, if I'm not mistaken.

Just because you are a guest in a country doesn't mean every one of said country's citizens has to act as if they personally invited you.

Joey And his Harleys

Geno's Steaks owner, Joey Vento has devoted his entire life to building his Geno's Steaks, leaving him little or no time for any outside interests. That is, until recently, when he decided to get involved in biking. Well, like everything else Joey does, he gave it his all.

After getting professional training and obtaining his license, he bought his first Harley. Not too long after that, he graduated to a larger bike and then went on to purchasing a third bike. All the bikes are housed across from Geno's, leading people to believe that he also runs a Harley business. Having the bikes close to his business affords him the opportunity to take off and ride with his friends after putting in his usual 7 Day a Week, 4am to 11am schedule.

It's a time to relax and unwind and when people kid him and say he's having a second childhood, he explains that's not the case; this is his first childhood. He was too busy working when he was younger, and only now, can he take off a little time to enjoy himself.

I went to the local "Boston Market" yesterday in a very conservative area and the music was solid Hispanic music. I could not believe it.

Me too!

The ingredients are simple, exacting and never greasy thinly sliced rib-eye steak, melted cheese, oven-fresh baked bread and delicately grilled onions. Awaiting your piping hot sandwich on the counter outside are ketchup, mustard, relish and Joe's choice hot sauce.

A Word of Warning!
Be prepared and know how to order, because the service is fast and the line keeps moving. For example, on a cheese steak with onions specify which kind of cheese you'd like (Provolone, American or Cheese Whiz). By the time you have given your order, your money will be taken and your sandwich will be out the window nice and hot! At the next window you can pick up your soda, fries and coffee. Geno's is open 24 Hours a Day, 7 Days a week.
