A former Republican congressman narrowly beat his Democratic rival early Wednesday for the right to fill the House seat once held by imprisoned Randy "Duke" Cunningham, a race closely watched as a possible early barometer of next fall's vote.
Republican Brian Bilbray emerged victorious after a costly and contentious race against Democrat Francine Busby, a local school board member who ran against Cunningham in 2004.
With 90 percent of precincts reporting, Bilbray had 56,016 votes or 49.5 percent. Busby trailed with 51,202 votes or 45 percent. "I think that we're going back to Washington," Bilbray told a cheering crowd of supporters.
The race one of dozens of election contests in eight states was viewed by Democrats as an opportunity to capture a solidly Republican district and build momentum on their hopes to capture control of the House
FYI..just read there are 40,000+ absentee ballots in the district...should be counted by this afternoon...one would susoect that more Dems might have voted earlier...we should check the final totals, and the possible discrepany for dem votes for governor and for Busby ....if you have a link to the official vote count..I can do it..thanks
FYI..see my #146 & #161..
"but you do need to think about how life would be different with Ted Kennedy as the head of the Judiciary Committee."
Sorry but I can't distinguish the two.
RINO or Democrat is a distinction without a difference.
Except when voting for the tax cuts or judicial appointments as mentioned by another poster.
Then you haven't been paying attention. Snarlin' Arlen has been on top of the Bush agenda with respect to the judiciary committee. I was convinced he would be spiteful and vindictive but he has run a tight ship there and neutered the Dems' attempt at distraction with the Alito nomination.
Even more reason for the Republican National Committee to get the message, keep their nose clean, and get with the program on illegal immmigration and (opposition) to amnesty and social services. No party has a carte blanche to continued power, in my book. They had better not take swing conservative voters for granted.
I'm well over the age of 7. I understand that I don't always get things my way. Does that mean that I compromise away our national sovereignty?
I don't run away blubbering. I'm a retired Navy Vietnam vet with 5 full rows of ribbons, and all of my scars are on the front! You want to mix it up....bring it on!
Quite likely that Clarence Thomas would not be on the Supreme Court but for Arlen Specter.
HA!! This DU post is hilarious!
"I hope somebody in our Party knows how we can change that impression in the next five months....because I sure don't."
And they walk around acting so cocky!!!! Hey Nancy...hey Boxer...are you listening??? hahahahaha!!!
The election thats in the news was for the remainder of the congressional term, until January. They will meet again, as there was a separate election, a primary, for the November general election. That will determine who serves the full two-year term beginning in January.
"The real questions is when will those republicans demanding purity learn that any republican is better than a dem"
Agree. Those "Rs" come in very handy in maintaining control inside those committees.
Bill and hill changing parties is never gonna happen.
Conservatives are not idiots.
Very sincere thanks for your service.
Exactly right.
The rats will claim this a moral victory for them even though they lost.
If we are the stupid party we will not be winning all these elections cycles. The democrats are the stupid party and the good thing for us is that they do not know it.
Just wondering how the election officials determine what % of those absentee ballots were cast by illegals?
A good point...I had forgotten Clarence Thomas. Spector also kept his word in getting both Alito and Roberts to the floor for votes.
So...then you are saying if the women don't find you handsome, then make sure they find you handy?
