Rhode Island Republicans have received piles of hate mail from supporters of U.S. Rep. Patrick J. Kennedy, angry that the GOP has called for the troubled six-term congressman to step down.
This has clearly hit a raw nerve somewhere, Rhode Island GOP spokesman Chuck Newton told the Herald.Weve received mountains of hate mail from all over.
Most of the letters and emails include angry and in some cases obscene tirades blasting party leaders for pushing for Kennedys ouster as a result of his legal troubles, Newton said.
Republicans initially called for Kennedy to step down the day after he slammed his Mustang into a security barrier near the U.S. Capitol building in Washington on May 4. Police reports allege that the crash was alcohol-related but Kennedy has denied drinking and blamed the wreck on prescription drugs.
Kennedy, meanwhile, got back to work yesterday in Washington, a day after publicly addressing his drug and alcohol woes for the first time since being released from his most recent stint in a Minnesota rehab.
Newton said the party is sympathetic and hoping for Kennedys full recovery but fears his repeated missteps are a major distraction.
The fact that hes suffering some problems makes it difficult for him to continue his responsibilities in Washington, Newton said. He ought to consider stepping down.
The 38-year-old congressman, though, says he has no plans to quit. In fact, he used his speech Monday at a Brown University mental health conference to reiterate his acceptance of the Democratic partys nomination of him to serve a seventh term.
I feel confident about my health, positive about my future, and passionate about my work representing the people of Rhode Island, Kennedy said.
just throw the hate mail away or pass it on to the FBI and quit worrying about it.
To hell with that. Why can't the stupid party say, "The guy is totally irresponsible, abused drugs, alcohol and his office, and is not fit to represent the citizens of Rhode Island on the basis of this behavior let alone his support for abortion, higher taxes and environmental extremism. We wish him well in his recovery, but he should be doing it on his time, not at the expense of Rhode Island and the nation."
And in case anyone misses my meaning, ask yourself where the RATS were, especially Patches' Daddy, when they were roasting John Tower on the confirmation spit over his drinking.
If Rhode Island wants a serial drug abuser and drunk as their representative, that's their right.
It says more about the idiots in Rhode Island than it does about Patches.
You have a man who admits driving under the influence, checks himself into treatment and a month later its all ok?
Where's MADD at on this one? Wheres the insurance lobby at demanding lawmakers set an example..........thats what I thought silence.
The R.I. repubs should be running commercials showing the scene of the wreck and kennedy walking into treatment and follow it with a tag line something like this "Would you allow an impaired addict to run your household and hold your check book and protect your family?...Well a vote for kennedy is just that"
They should run the ads and take the heat for it, thats if, IF, they really care to defeat him. I don't think they do I think its a seat the parties have agreed to gift to kennedy.
Time to end the folly of Rhode Island being a state. The people there have shown themselves incapable of self-government. Merge it into Connecticut.
The RAT Party has never turned away nor turned out a Kennedy --no matter how ridiculous the antics or serious the problem--and they are not about to start now.
Yep the Kennedys have a long term lease on that particular seat good extending through... at least three drunken-drug induced wreaks, two rape trials (ala Palm Beach) and a homicide or two.
If this were a Republican hanging on, the dims would be in full hysteria.
Split California in two on the same day, and you won't even have to change the flag.
One more Patchaquiddick ping! (article dated 6-7-06)
Just announced on Fox he will plead GUILTY today to DWI..but, BUT..didn't he say that alcohol was NOT involved.GASP..you mean he lied???
But he gets off on wreckless driving and failure to produce a driver's license. Sure, he is taking FULL (BULL) responsibility for his actions.

Patrick's out late at night...he was driving impaired
Everyone who was nearby was certainly scared
He had smashed up his car and although that was bad
At least there was not a dead woman like there was with dad
When he was in his teens he was hooked on cocaine
Like all Kennedys, for the law there is disdain
He had smashed up his car and although that was bad
Well, at least there was not a dead woman like there was with dad
Why is he getting a pass...one more Kennedy slides...it is such a disgrace
When he came out to the press...I know I would have died... had he worn dad's neck brace
He had lied to the police, saying he's late for voting
That is just one more crime, I think it is worth noting
He had smashed up his car and although that was bad
Well, at least there was not a dead woman like there was with dad
He smashed up his car...although that was bad
At least there was not a dead woman like there was with dad
Why is he getting a pass...one more Kennedy slides...it is such a disgrace
When he came out to the press...I know I would have died... had he worn dad's neck brace
So he's off to rehab...is this problem genetic?
As a role model, his father's really pathetic
He had smashed up his car and although that was bad
So he had a tough day, but at least he can say
There was not a dead woman like dad
He smashed up his car...although that was bad
At least there was not a dead woman like there was with dad

In Patrick Kennedy's defense, no one drowned when he crashed his car.
Could not have said it better myself.
