Are hate crimes worse than love crimes, such as homicides resulting from the infidelity of a spouse or lover?

Emphatically, yes!

I cite a quote from best-selling author, Michael Fumento.

"The rationales for hate-crimes are as thin as onion skins".

For anyone who is open to reading a clear and wise view of "hate crime", I suggest:

fumento.com/standard.html,.

Personally, I have always believed that the "hate crime" law is ridiculous. I have yet to see a crime against someone else committed out of love, or even "like" of the victim. Why should law decide that some people deserve more protection than others? Because of silly-minded politicans. And yes, some of them are unable to think logically.
